EVERYBODY NOMINATE ALEX, NOMINATE THEM SO HARD IT'S VISIBLE FROM SPACE

I can't say enough about Alex's presence in the SFF community, their generous and thoughtful reviewing, and the work they do to uplift marginalized creators.
I don’t usually campaign for awards, but this year I’ve decided to go for broke for a Fan Writer Hugo Award. Yay me!

Nominations are now open for the 2026 Hugo Awards!

Emails are going out to eligible nominators (those who became a member of LAcon V by January 31, 2026, or were a member of the Seattle Worldcon 2025) about how to set up their LAcon V virtual convention account.

very excited to have my response included in the latest Boston Review forum against Democratic moderation! here it is, my best argument for why Dems shouldn't "moderate" on transgender rights & LGBTQ issues more generally (as they are inextricably linked): www.bostonreview.net/forum/how-no...
Trans rights aren’t tanking the Democrats.

I will add that we’ve also lost the art of nonconforming features, imperfect teeth, and forfeiting hairlines.

Hollywood has always had the hot/polished Sidney Poitier, Lauren Bacall, Jolie/Pitt, etc types, but - as someone raised on TCM - the ratio of gloss to grit among the under 45s feels off.
I watched 12 ANGRY MEN (1957) for the first time this past week and I've determined we lost our way when men in movies stopped being drenched in sweat.

OK folks, let's get this started. Think back to pandemic year 2020. Think of SFF books from that year which "include positive explorations of gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered characters, themes, or issues." A broad citation!

Here's my initial longlist from racking my brain. What've I missed?

Hey folks!

Due to a series of unforeseen expenses, I need to raise some cash before royalty season rolls around at the beginning of April. Because of that, I am going to do something I don't usually do and offer paid mentoring sessions for aspiring writers.

The trouble is that we have a bad habit, encouraged by pedants and sophisticates, of considering happiness as something rather stupid. Only pain is intellectual, only evil interesting.

Y’all want division to be THE problem because you don’t want to deal with the racists. Specifically the ones you know, love, and admire. Especially the one in your own heart. Unfortunately, that commitment to an only sometimes soothing delusion is powerful enough to break a nation.

Collecting Children's Lore!
February is going to be all about Children's Lore, which is defined as the folklore created, shared, and maintained by children. So it's not folklore about children, but rather spread by them! A lot...

A book that opens with my current mood. The best time to pre-order @fondalee.bsky.social’s The Last Contract of Isako was the moment the option became available in bookstores. The second best time is now. (Out from @orbitbooks.bsky.social in May)

I'm re-sharing the Gofundme for two family members I made last year. They had a series of tragedies beginning in early 2024. We successfully raised enough to help them relocate to a new state last year, and the elder sister has a new job in her field. gofund.me/a455ba8c0

Let’s remember (and remind our politicians) we are not trying to drive ICE out of our state. We are trying to drive them out of existence.

If you don’t want ICE on your block but think “Abolish ICE” is too extreme, you desire a terrorized “other”…just not where it inconveniences you.

If you are, say, a mayor or politician with this view, then you want freedom from terror while also wanting the option to set terror upon others.

A few months ago I was on The Science in the Fiction Podcast discussing necropolitics, @nedbeauman.bsky.social's Venomous Lumpsucker & my dissertation. If you ignore the fast-talking/too many "likes" at the start (I shift out of So Cal convo mode as we go) it ended up being uncomfortably relevant:

Honestly cannot fix this for my family by myself, which is why I’m asking for help. It’s super important for them to fully pay the rent because the longer the delay, the higher the chance of eviction. Housing security is necessary for any kind of stability.
I spent this morning thanking people for donating to our crisis. Which is still ongoing. We've raised about ~$200/$900. This will help a little, but we do need more help. Please any assistance is beyond appreciated. Any repost, donations and even well wishes.
