5k in! Still love this WIP. What is wrong with me.
In this snippet, we focus on the truly scary:
“I’m fine.” “You just said you were feeling sick.” I held up my hands. “And it’ll pass soon. I just need to lie down for a bit. I don’t need a hospital bill I can’t pay when all I did was faint. I do that sometimes.” The partner softened slightly when I mentioned hospital bill. One thing we all had in common, I guess: fear of exorbitant medical bills we couldn’t pay.

The hotel was a sore thumb in the downtown district, a new construction that had gone up quickly and now soared several stories above the other, older buildings. While it looked as solid as everything else, I’d seen its wooden skeleton while it was being built. I could only hope it was otherwise up to fire code. We hesitated outside the automatic glass doors that led into the lobby, playing spot the invitation. Sunny saw one first, a “welcome to our worldclass hotels” on the lobby desk. She gave us a thumb’s up and we sauntered inside without a puff of resistance. God, I loved hotels.

She glanced at Kevin. “Was your password something like new password?” “No,” said Kevin hotly. “It was—” Sunny held up a hand, stopping him. “Mm, maybe don’t share it. But do change it. I’m sure you have very secure passwords, but if you reuse them and our friend had access to your room during your transition period, it would be a piece of cake to cycle through them until she logged into your account.” “What does that mean?” asked Kevin. “You weren’t hacked, honey,” drawled Sunny. “You’re just bad at cybersecurity.” Kevin looked miserable. I patted him reassuringly on the back. “It’s okay. I mean, it’s not, because now the whole of Sparkle Net has been invited to our town and, while I’m sure most of them know better, I’m equally sure a non-token amount don’t, but… where was I going with that?” “You were trying to reassure me,” said Kevin glumly. “Oh right.” I patted him again. “At least you can change your password now to something she won’t know.”

Beautiful at sunrise and sunset, sure. Right now, though, it was just a dark building with nowhere to hide. “Heather?” I called, even though there was no way she was here. I walked down the center aisle, my boots clicking on the tile. I reached the stage and turned around—and nearly leaped out of my own skin. Heather sat in the foremost pew, legs crossed and head angled back to watch me. She wore the same jeans and shirt she’d had on earlier in the night, although now they had a number of new dark stains. Her straight black hair was clumped in places, as if it, too, had gone through the mud. Or an awful lot of blood. As if I’d been unsure about the origins of all those stains, Heather lifted a hand toward me and dried blood clearly visible around and under her fingernails. She waved.

She only spoke for a second before handing the receiver back. The clerk hung up and they exchanged a few more gestures and words before she turned around. It was her, all right. Same eyes, same face shape, same lips, same hair. Heather Dean, in the flesh. What was she doing here? Who had she called? But I knew both of those answers already, didn’t I? Her gaze tracked idly across the lobby, past the glass doors. Then back to them. No, she shouldn’t be able to see me, even with her enhanced vision. It was full night outside and she stood in a brightly lit interior. Yet I swear those eyes snagged on me through the doors, through the darkness, and across the parking lot. Then, worse: a knowing smile. Like a handshake, there and gone in the same breadth of time. Like we were on the same side and she hadn’t just been fucking up my life for the past week.

A little breaking and entering...
I darted behind the opening door, a blur of movement she wouldn’t notice in the dark. There I hovered, like a serial killer in a movie, except I didn’t have a knife to raise above my head to catch the light and the swelling soundtrack. I allowed myself a small grin at the absurdity of it. Then she clicked on the light and turned to close the door. Her gaze dragged across me, as if I were too impossible to actually exist, and then snagged and drew back. Her lips parted. The color drained from her face. It was all too tempting to shout, “Boo!” You’d be proud of me for resisting.

Agent Morris relaxed slightly. Or, at least, she removed her hand from her gun. She still stood stiff as a board and several feet away. I longed to close that gap, if only to have her shove me away again. She was strong for a human. Of course, she wouldn’t be able to overcome me, but it’d be fun to let her try. I shook my head. What was I thinking? This wasn’t like me at all. The last few days had really addled my brain in bright new ways.
