Awards don't mean much right now, but I hope that when the siege is over the @startribune.com gets some kind of recognition for its coverage. This is how journalism is supposed to work.
Hundreds of demonstrators are streaming toward downtown Minneapolis for a march and rally against federal law enforcement, waving signs that read "ICE OUT!"

Funniest possible arc for this NBA season would be for the Raptors to trade Scottie for Kawhi, then win the championship
Kawhi Leonard swishes the 3-pointer in Jake LaRavia's face to beat the shot clock, and put the Clippers up 23 points in the 3rd quarter (With a replay)

Vincenzo Natali's CUBE (1997) has proven to be one of the most prescient films of our time. The line "You have to use it, or you admit it's pointless," applies to almost all of the tech foisted on us since 2000. It's perfect for generative AI. It works just as well for ICE. We live in a giant cube.

Good one from @wtevs.bsky.social this morning in Basketball Feelings, about being stuck in the snow, and the psychological grind of the NBA's trade machine.

Abandoning literacy was a critical mistake.
Trump says on Feb 1 he will impose a 10% tariff “on any and all goods sent” to US from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, UK, Netherlands, & Finland, increasing to 25% June 1 “until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland.”

Toronto should be positioning itself as THE alternative for any conference looking to move out of the US. Major economic opportunity.
Some BIG news for the UBI community:

"Following a review of international travel conditions and visa accessibility for participants, a decision has reluctantly been reached to relocate the 2026 BIEN Congress from University of Pennsylvania, USA, to Toronto Metropolitan University Toronto, Canada."

Still blows my mind that Dexter Holland made one of the most successful independent albums of all time, spun a couple novelty hits into a 30-year career as a punk musician, AND did a PhD in molecular biology on research that likely contributed to the treatment for HIV. What a dude.
Shakespeare spent the entirety of his time on this emerald orb plumbing the depths of human emotion yet never came close to producing something as beautiful as this:

The LA fires are probably your most vivid illustration of our new age of wildfire and all the devastation it promises. But were they even wildfires? The ignition wasn’t wild, the fuel wasn’t wild, the landscape wasn’t wildland and wildland firefighting couldn’t help. www.nytimes.com/2026/01/05/o...

Bukowski reputedly said of Al Purdy: "I don't know of any good living poets. But there's this tough son of a bitch up in Canada that walks the line."
Al Purdy was born on this day in 1918. This CBC Learning Systems LP of Purdy reading his own poems is one of my most cherished records.

My New Year's resolution is to upgrade my trial to a paid subscription to Basketball Feelings. Original ideas, great analysis and insight, and writers that care about basketball and sentences. This is now I want sports media to work. Gotta support it.
