This is very, very good, and exceptionally unsettling. My favorite sort of cultural criticism (being that which is also art criticism).

The spaces described are both unheimlich/uncanny and BLEAK AS FUCK, which is (I think) central to the argument, & also utterly grim as sociocultural commentary.
Over the past few weeks, HiLoBrow has run installments of my long essay “Without Care,” which maps out a 21st century gothic that I started calling The Devoid. All four installments are now live and you can read the whole thing here; enjoy!

in case you missed it - this feels very relevant in light of the emails between Larry Summers & Jeffrey Epstein. In the emails, Summers is seeking advice on how to seduce a woman he describes as a mentee type. Unknown who she is or where she was working or studying. He was at Harvard.

My favorite book of all time. (Maybe there’s more than one book that I would describe that way.)
After days of careful consideration in which all the evidence was weighed and the witnesses heard, they made their decision:

Words and numbers are of equal value, for, in the cloak of knowledge, one is warp and the other woof. It is no more important to count the sands than it is to name the stars.

WE WON. I am *begging* you to take note of who did this. *Not* UCLA admin—they’re still scuttling around behind closed doors, attempting to appease—but FACULTY AND STAFF, led by AAUP.
BREAKING: In AAUP et al v. Trump (wall-to-wall union lawsuit challenging the administration’s unlawful use of TItle VI to reshape the University of California system), the faculty and staff of the UC system WON!!!

We were granted our preliminary injunction! @aaup.org

Believe it or not, recognizing Trump is the personification of three centuries of American racism doesn't normalize him or make it harder to oppose him.

It means we're fighting the right problem, making it more likely we prevent another Trump.

How to flirt and not be creepy. These stories are important too!
He took maybe one step toward me and I clearly made a face or raised my hand. He *immediately* stopped, and was like "I think I've misread this?" And I was like "omg sorry absolutely" and he wished me a goodnight and left.
We still hung out and was not weird going forward.
The end.

This archived Twitter thread from Feb 2020 feels especially relevant.

Women move through the world knowing that you can name a field of endeavor—any field of endeavor—and a few of the Great Men in it, & you'll find rapists. And that we are required to make some kind of peace with that knowledge.
A famous actor of remarkable skill died at a very ripe old age today. Beyond his art, he's known for taking a stand that helped end the terror of the McCarthy years, & for raping a 16 yo girl, events that happened just a few yrs apart. I'm purposely not using his name because

As a psychologist, it's a really, really, really interesting and maddening set of problems here. Software development really exposes for me how we think about people's minds, even though it's an industry that likes to pretend it isn't thinking about people's minds at all.

But it really is.

New — While some states have received SNAP benefits for November and USDA is supposedly pushing through all federal payments soon, that doesn’t erase the psychological terror of the last few weeks.

I spoke with 20+ SNAP recipients in 16 states about preparing for a possible future with no food:
The voices of SNAP
Recipients have become political pawns. They explained, in their own words, what Trump withholding funds has been like.

He'll make a great mayor

this is interesting. i strongly prefer for someone to assume my pronouns. i also think there is assumption that pronouns and gender are same thing when one is what you prefer to be called and one is what you actually are. in other words it is okay to want to be called the technically ‘wrong’ thing
hot take: I think we should go back to assuming peoples pronouns. if we get it wrong, we should be corrected, say "thank you for correcting me", and not get it wrong again.

I am so upset.

Last week Time Magazine solicited a piece from me on Zohran Mamdani & anti-Muslim hate. I pitched a framing re the dehumanization of Muslims & how Mamdani’s inclusive, socialist campaign in its content resists that. They agreed. I wrote the piece. 1/
To be asked to write about racism only to be racially aggressed in the editing process is a new level unlocked I have to say.
