That was directed at @rweingarten.bsky.social who is making big AI partnership moves for public school teachers, not the video

Is it just me or do the AI dogs all have Kash Patel eyes?

"World Enough and Time" is the title of an SF novel and episodes of Star Trek and Doctor Who.

And "Fine and Private Place" a novel by Peter S Beagle (better known for the Last Unicorn).

These lines get extra resonance for me from these stories, and the stories gain meaning from this poem.

I love all these references! LeGuin's story "Vaster than Empires and More Slow" is about empathizing with a sentient forest.

In the introduction to the story, she writes "We all have forests in our minds. Forests unexplored, unending. Each of us gets lost in the forests, every night, alone."

YES, I was so happy when I discovered that the recaps continue on Patreon! The basic level that gets you access to all of them is very inexpensive.

And the biography of Coxeter titled "King of Infinite Space", all about the beautiful geometry he studied and explained.

And they’re just y = mx + b dressed up in a_n = a_1 + (n-1)d

Who decided sequences should be 1-indexed in math class anyway? I would care more except I also think we should use y - k = m(x - h)

I already know all about this from @aptshadow.bsky.social ‘s fiction!

I read your post and before clicking the link I assumed you were talking about www.science.org/content/arti... Geoff Marcy …

My kids definitely did! But they read more modern stuff over the summer typically, I think The Hate U Give and Educated were among them?

It was deeply meaningful for me to write a letter to my dad about all the things I wish he could know/see about my life, my family ...

It was deeply meaningful for me to think about what his responses might have been.

I can't imagine replacing that with some statistical language patterns.

Definitely reminds me of the famous third derivative news story, Nixon says the rate of increase of inflation is slowing down. wmueller.com/precalculus/... for example

I'm assuming the next ridiculous step is "Therefore, we should cut interest rates by half a point" while ignoring any data and/or making sure it's not available in time for the Fed meeting.

I had a lot of fun teaching a history of astronomy course, where we looked at passages from Aquinas vs Galileo and discussed in what ways the writing was “science” or not. That made for some great conversation! Probably one of the best parts for me was searching Aquinas for the most sciencey passage

It's so interesting that in the name of practicality we are urged to avoid any practical action; in the name of redemption we are urged to exonerate people who have shown no interest in redemption; in the name of civility we are urged to overlook the cruelty of those who scorn all civility
