A bolt of lightning, on a night unlooked for, smote the ancient oak and split it in twain. Long had it stood, a seemingly permanent witness to ages. The sudden fire revealed truth within: hidden rot, a hollow heart, and slow decay beneath its bark.

We should view "even the British monarchy are better at holding their elites to account for their crimes than the US is right now" not as proof that we're doomed -

but as an inspiring challenge to do an even BETTER job of purging our loathsome murdering-rapist tech CEO and MAGA class.

Babel.

My friends and I were all thinking how much we wanted to walk out of the film, but too polite to say anything, thinking that the others might be enjoying it.

Nope. We all hated it.
fun question: what’s the maddest you’ve ever been leaving a movie theater? not necessarily worst movie you’ve seen, but the one that just pissed you off the most. mine is Batman v Superman

Still think it's really fucked up that the President can target a whole state and terrorize it and do ethnic cleansing and whatnot and life just goes on I guess without impeachment or a government shutdown or something.

This is why Minnesotans are begging folks outside the state to keep talking about us.

Please don’t let the world forget we are still in danger.
This is the aftermath of an ICE kidnapping a few blocks from my home in St. Paul—an hour ago. A quiet street full of broken glass and at least three wrecked cars. The target of the kidnapping was taken away by ambulance. He was on a stretcher and covered by a sheet, though a cop said he was alive.

Ada Lovelace was/is/will always be right: “The Analytical Engine has no pretensions whatever to originate anything. It can do whatever we know how to order it to perform.” Every AI dude seems to forget that some instructions have unintended consequences. But intention isn’t all that matters.

i think this more than anything is what miller wants. vast detention camps with all of the suffering and death that means.
ICE has now spent over half a BILLION dollars just on purchasing warehouses around the country to convert into detention camps.

If these mega-camps are utilized to the full capacity ICE intends, they'll be the largest prisons in the country, with little real oversight. www.ajc.com/politics/202...

The largest federal prison in the nation is Fort Dix, which has a rated capacity of 4,600 people. The largest of these warehouse camps may hold more than twice that number of people.

The federal government hasn't operated a prison camp inside the United States that large since Japanese Internment.

Right now Rikers Island, the physically largest jail in the entire United States, is holding under 7,000 people.

ICE's warehouse plans include detention camps which will hold between 8,500-10,000 people in buildings not designed for human habitation.

I really do think this is an excellent metaphor for the moment.
I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

“Collection of Handwritten Letters from Children in Detention Center” sounds like an exhibit in the Holocaust Museum.
1/ ProPublica collected handwritten letters in mid-January from children held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center, the same facility where 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos was taken.

Hundreds of kids are still detained.

We’ll let the children’s words speak for themselves. 🧵
