It always amazes me that the people who rail against crazy cycling activists pushing their agenda on them are the SAME PEOPLE who apparently long for the Good Old Days. I'm 61 and I lived in those days. I rode the TTC to school on Grade 4, and rode my bike absolutely everywhere.
how about instead of focusing our energy on teaching kids road safety we teach adults safe systems.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

I keep thinking about this 1997 Outer Limits episode where everyone has a brain implant that hooks them into The Stream, except this one guy whose brain won't take it, and then The Stream crashes and he ends up ruling the world because everyone else has forgotten how to open a fucking book.
Worth reading for lots of reasons, but particularly because it closes with something I see in my work and travels speaking on writing and AI. Many, maybe most students do not want AI-mediated schooling or lives. We can offer them something better. www.currentaffairs.org/news/ai-is-d...
AI is Destroying the University and Learning Itself
Students use AI to write papers, professors use AI to grade them, degrees become meaningless, and tech companies make fortunes. Welcome to the death of higher education.

Very exciting. When the Eglinton Crosstown finally opens, I plan to go to Toronto and spend a day riding that and the Finch West, from end to end. Just like I did when the Spadina line opened way back when. Because I'm that old...
An Alstom Citadis Spirit train pulls into Finch West Station.

Its been many years delayed but its finally here.

Fun fact: Rose was exposed by defector Igor Gouzenko, who spent the rest of his life in Canada hiding from the KGB and wearing a sack over his head when he did interviews. My dad was one of his lawyers. I met him when I was 16 when he did a TV interview in our basement.
On this day in 1907, Fred Rose was born.
He was elected to Parliament in 1943 but was expelled after he was found guilty of conspiring to steal weapons research for the Soviet Union. His Canadian citizenship was revoked and he died in Poland in 1983.

In Canada, unlike certain other countries, our response to the mass shooting of women has been to significantly strengthen our gun laws, and to remember and honour the names of the women who were murdered - every single year, from that terrible day to this. We will never, ever forget.
On this day in 1989, an armed gunman murdered 14 women at École Polytechnique de Montréal. Another ten women and four men were injured.
The anniversary of the massacre is commemorated annually on Dec. 6 as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

I will have to send this to every member of Milton's Town Council. It's no accident that the ones who consistently vote against investing in transit while simultaneously complaining about 'empty buses' are also the ones who have never commuted by transit in their lives.
Do you find yourself in conversations with people who like to talk about how "they would never ride a bus" or who worry about "bus stigma"? I was just reminded of this 2017 article of mine, which tries to blow all that nonsense away. Hope you find it useful.
