Another social media, another intro. I’m Jared. I make RPGs, write about motorbike racing and fix servers for a living. You may know me from the other social medias.
Watching the Festive Pottery Throwdown and every time I see Keith Brymer-Jones, I’m reminded of Rya from Elden Ring for some reason.

Yes, the why matters too.
Anyway, Not sure what year it was, but I'm kicking about @conpulsion.bsky.social and got a game I think is shit hot, and peeps are being very kind with giving the practicalities of *how* to publish. But Malcolm, really wisely imo, asked me to think about *why* I wanted my game published.

Excellent thread.

Why are you doing the thing? What is your target?

I’m reminded how @mogwai.scot self-published their first single because their goal was to get a single played on John Peel’s show.

Having a target goal means you’re more likely to work towards it and succeed.
And I’m not doing that for you. Your thoughts on *your* mission are your own.
And hey maybe your actual goal IS being in a starter pack or you’re focused exclusively winning a medal.

I think it’s worth thinking about why, and how long that external stuff can sustain you as a creator.

Love u bye

Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

Life is for living. If you are doing something you enjoy, you are not wasting your time

This sort of statistic is misleading. That’s not necessarily time wasted as you weren’t going to do anything productive in those hours. I almost certainly have thousands of hours logged, but it’ll be over decades, but even if it was an average of hour a day, it’s still not wasted.
This evening I noticed my "total hours played" statistic. Fuck. 3800 hours. Two whole working years. I've spent two years doing nothing but playing video games. And I didn't even get paid for it.

The absolute best way to work with people you want to work with is to be the sort of person they want to work with.

Like, don’t be a dick is a baseline, obviously, but beyond that, be generous, kind, reliable and friendly. Be someone they would want to spend time with.

Be nice.
Just gonna say this again for games sphere cus we get the same question:

Networking doesn't mean schmoozing up to famous people, it means making friends with your peers. Then in 10 years, 20, one of you might be famous? And sure you're still helping each other cus well yeah friends.

Make. Friends.
Talking to one of these types at a con who asked how I 'got in' with so many 'famous writers' who I'd been talking to and I said "we made friends before anyone knew who we were decades ago by striking up interesting conversations and enjoying each other's company" and he kept re-asking the question.

Today, we were at the National Gallery of Scotland. I really enjoyed the room with the amazing (not you, Gaugin) Impressionists, and it was great to see a Morisot in its rightful place.

We were there to see my wife’s painting in the Visual Arts Scotland exhibition, which was also great.

I seem to have picked up some new Bluesky followers. Was it RPGs, Motorcycle Racing, nerdy shit or lefty ranting?

Well, whichever it was, don’t be surprised when the rest turns up. You like RPGs? You’re gonna learn more about Pirelli SC0s than you ever thought possible. Nerd? Have a disparity rant!

Did you know that you can convert an old 27” iMac into a 5k monitor? All you need is a circuit board from Ali Express, a replacement board when that’s delivered dead, basic electronic skills, brute force, titanium fishing weights, a power supply, patience, etc.

I’ll colour correct it later.

I dug out my 1981 D&D book. That’s the very book I played with for years with my brothers. It’s joining my other old books in my office.

I just watched the F1 movie on Apple TV. The entire plot is predicated on the fact both hero drivers are the absolute worst qualifiers on the grid.

consider my feedback: i loved working at @larianstudios.com until AI. reconsider and change your direction, like, yesterday. show your employees some respect. they are world-class & do not need AI assistance to come up with amazing ideas.

Looking for an *L.A. based* artist who (against all odds) has time for a poster gig before the end of the year.

It's for a science + art event.

We can offer $500 for the gig.

Dreadfully sorry about the timeline. Link a portfolio if you're interested, I'll delete this post when we found someone.

This brings another point to the fore: how many RPGs are literally subsidised by their creators? When creators can’t make a living doing games, they’ll effectively make them for free.

Full-time publishers have to compete with amateurs that give their work away for free. It’s hard for everyone.
And printing isn’t exactly cheap in these numbers.

Can even 1% of RPG creators (writers, illustrators, editors, layouters, ...) make a living off of this gig?
