Oh, so just caught up with the news - new taxes can just disappear by calling them levies. Sweet. That wealth levy of ours should now be supported by everyone. Labour can go bolder with its CGL

#NZpol What would have been helpful would have been a *comparison*, comparing building a new LNG installation with, say, installing new solar + wind + battery power.

With no comparison, this is just rolling out one ‘solution’, rather than that being the best option.

Does it ever make sense?

National is going to raise your power prices to pay for a facility that might never be used, simply to create the illusion that gas has a future and discourage industrial users from switching.

What a waste of money

We should not be subsidising fossil fuels.

And it's a whopper of a subsidy: The fuel+capital+operating cost of LNG (via BCG "Energy to Grow" report) is $44/GJ, half of that capital+O&M costs, if its for dry-year cover only. So paying the fixed costs with a levy HALVES the LNG price... 1/-

So help me understand something here.
After I have put $30k of my hard earned money on a solar system, I will now have to sunsidise the fossil fuel industry because we are being governed by 🦖?
What, and I mean it in the nicest way possible, the actual fuck?

A marine biologist says the Moa Point sewage spill could be a massive ecological disaster that would take many years to reverse.

Millions of liters of raw sewage now pour into the sea, following a catastrophic sewage treatment plant failure in NZ’s capital city.

Beware the con artists. This one had a New Zild accent!

I shall discuss it on my weekly telco/bank anti-fraud call tomorrow. 😇

Only days ago, Luxon claimed NZ was not in talks with the US on a minerals agreement, that would accelerate mining.

But the US has been much more forthcoming, admitting we are in talks and moving towards agreement. My article today.

It gets worse. While (a few) households save up the megabucks, Government does the same! The NZ Govt is not in debt according to any sensible measure. So, Govt and wealthy households stack up savings while our infra falls apart, kids go hungry, teeth go rotten, etc. Make it make sense. [2/n]

Nothing winds me up more than Luxon and assorted other suits saying we need to be wealthier before we can afford doctors, nurses, water we can swim in etc. Meanwhile wealthier kiwi households have stacked up huge piles of savings (cash, shares, equity etc). The economy works for the few. [🧵 1/n]

Please do read Helen’s article, now also at RNZ, linked in my first post – it explains some of why we need WHO.

My little thread/rant is because Peters’ playing this nonsense still gets to me 😄

Here’s a polite take by @helenp-h.bsky.social ⬇️

What struck me was the WHO documents had a clause clarifying that sovereign decision making is unaffected.
