If you don’t want NZ politics, just mute the hashtag #NZpol

I try to tag political posts with this to help those who are more interested in science, science communication, etc.

Similarly, most posts meant for New Zealanders are tagged #NZ or #kikorangi

It’s a recurring thing: media only lasts for so long, so you have to "refresh" stored data by recopying it.

Also, there is "that" thing of new file formats to represent data, having to bring data in old formats to new representations. The article doesn’t touch on that.

The original paper is

I know nothing of Kristi Leavitt, and I’ve only watched her "performances" a few times, but ye g-ds the zeal she has to serve as the White House’s liar-in-chief, her gleeful joy in blatantly lying. It’s as if she’s lost to a cult or has deep psychopathy. Or is it sociopathy, I wouldn’t know.
Imagine doing this with your one precious life. Other people are out there teaching children and curing cancer and you decide to spend your time telling outrageous, laughably unbelievable lies about a dementia-addled rapist and fraud whose legacy will be nearly ending US democracy
Leavitt: "I think it's frankly ridiculous that anyone in this room would even suggest that President Trump is doing anything for his own benefit. He left a life of luxury and a life of running a very successful real estate empire for public service."

Snapper could help future-proof aquaculture in Aotearoa 🌊🐟
New research from the Bioeconomy Science Institute Maiangi Taiao shows selectively bred snapper grow faster and survive better than wild fish — a promising climate-resilient option. Links ⬇️

🖥️ This is *very* much a #NZ take on this 😆

(Read the ALT for an explanation. Footrot Flats is well-known cartoon in NZ. There’s even a movie, The Dog’s Tale. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Footrot...)

PSA to my fellow Zoom users -- it's automatically turned on a bunch of A.I. features without asking you✌️

to turn all 32 of them off, go to "Settings" --> "My Account" --> "View advanced features"

it'll open up your browser and list a SHITTON of A.I. features, many of which will be on (scroll!)

#NZ Nice to see Fran Wilde on 1News tonight naming climate change as the underlying issue in relation to our recent floods.

Wish more national-level politicians would. Not saying so just panders to a noisy minority.

People with a decent genetics or zoology background will say this isn’t going to "bring back" Moa.

At best they’ll end up with a variant of their model bird, with a few "Moa-ish" features.

I hope investors understand that well.

Not impressed with the AI slop illustrations either.

Today I heard Paul Scofield, Senior Curator of Natural History at Canterbury Museum, give a public talk on moa resurrection and the museumʻs partnership with Colossal Biosciences (the “dire wolf” people).

💉 You wish people were more aware of the consequences of not vaccinating. It’s often talked about in terms of deaths, so that the devastating non-fatal effects are not mentioned.

A few examples below 🧵⬇️ (I may add more later.)
As a survivor of measles (pre existence of the vaccine), and who was left with ruined eyesight and poor immune system and it probably led to my asthma developing, it breaks my heart that parents are intentionally deciding not to vaccinate their children against this devastating disease.

Autocratic rule, etc., etc. 😔

(Autocrats not liking their ‘services’ to be wronged, their narratives to be challenged, so they bury evidence of any wrongs, or outlaw investigations one way or other, etc.)

Hello Bluesky!

Does Nₑ really explain mutation rate (μ) or genome size (GS) in vertebrates?

We find the apparent Nₑ–μ link in Bergeron et al. (2023) is a “back-door” path via generation time, and GS is decoupled from both Nₑ and life-history traits.
