Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has proposed disastrous cuts to our city's libraries while setting aside $5M for a ShotSpotter replacement. As library associate Sara Heymann told me, “Libraries embody everything we need to fight back against fascism.” My piece on what’s at stake and how to fight back:
You Can’t Fight Fascism While Defunding Libraries

I need everybody to read this and understand what’s going on. These are spouses of US citizens in the country legally. They have entry clearance and green cards, they’ve passed background checks and have no criminal records. ICE is taking them anyway.

pre-writing a devastating obituary for your enemy is god-tier hating of a kind you don’t often see anymore. renaissance haterism. beautiful stuff.
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

Democrats already run moderates in nearly every swing district. It's not enough. A data-driven response to the case for centrism as a core electoral strategy.

“Despite the nearly 40% decrease in the number of people incarcerated in the Cook County Jail, the Cook County Department of Corrections budget has not seen a reduction that coincides with that change in responsibility.”
sixty-eight chicago community, faith, + social service organizations are calling on cook county commissioners to “protect and increase social service spending” amid drastic cuts nationally from the trump admin.

they suggest freezing all law enforcement spending, which has “unjustifiably increased.”

Research shows that participating in prison education helps people find employment after release and helps keep them from going back to prison. In Illinois, some people who complete educational programs can also earn time off their sentences. trib.al/2UgegOM
For every person in an Illinois prison college class, another waits their turn.
Research shows getting educated in prison helps prevent people from going back. In Illinois, new state data shows higher education opportunities inside are sparse.

Checking out the midyear budget report some more and something really jumped out at me.

There's a little more context to provide here but I was surprised & concerned at the comparative size of income tax collections and fines/fees/penalties.

We can't & shouldn't fine our way to fiscal health 😬

This is really important progress worth celebrating

It's also insufficient (see article: still below prepandemic levels and ~20,000 more youth apply than slots)

And it lost 1,000 proposed new slots to budget cuts

NOTE:
Summer stipends for 1,000 kids = ~$2.4M

CPD overspent its budget by $207M
