I think we probably need a more specific term for the applications of machine learning that we've been using in science for decades. No one called it "AI" when we were using trained Markov chains for genome mapping in the 2000s, there's no need to start now.

I do think the genie is out of the bottle in terms of using the word "AI" to mean any predictive computer model using trained linear algebra/Markov chains. As far as I can tell the application of the term AI almost always is used for generative AI by the public.
