I’m past defending JC, but when Zack Polanski connected his Jewish heritage and family history to Labour’s immigration policy on Newsnight, and the woman next to him scoffed and shook her head, I did find myself thinking, “How interesting that we’re back to that being acceptable again. And so soon.”
I fully agree Old Jezza’s failure to clock the very dodgy mural reflected badly on him. I do however contrast the reaction to this against e.g. Sir Keir cribbing from Enoch Powell, the billowing sixty foot union flag crackdowns and Suella Braverman summoning fash football thugs to attack protestors.

Doesn’t matter. “Starmer and Mahmood wanted to take jewellery from asylum seekers” is a mark those two will never be able to wash off and which the party as a whole will have to put in onerous work to remove.
My guess is they will end up u-turning on the jewellery thing (you can already see it being softening in interviews) and possibly the 20 years (which is way longer than Denmark).

What you are witnessing here is an educated professor of political science refusing to countenance the notion that a political party dominated by right-wingers who use right-wing rhetoric and pursue right-wing policies might be doing so because they are right-wing and desire right-wing ends.
