I know a lot of people earnestly believe that politics is putting the best ideas or policy out there and doing some high-minded weighing of what's best, but that's obviously bullshit and politics are just competing material interests and admitting that is the first step to accomplishing anything

Yes, people are intentionally reading in bad faith, because calling someone a racist and a Nazi is more fun than talking about numbers or policies. Much preferable to assume the person is bad, so you don’t have to do any of that work and can get right to calling them ugly.
The bad faith reading of Matt’s post is crazy. He’s not saying immigrants are taking away people’s housing, but that people who are recent immigrants are unlikely to have stable housing! People who come here with little more than a dream of a better life are not coming with an apartment pre-rented!

So I've been pretty vocally skeptical of politics as being materially driven, and I've been trying to distill down what I think the alternative viewpoint is. Information and psychology play a role, but what's the mechanism? And I think the best way to sum it up is "social expectations."
