I know a lot of people earnestly believe that politics is putting the best ideas or policy out there and doing some high-minded weighing of what's best, but that's obviously bullshit and politics are just competing material interests and admitting that is the first step to accomplishing anything

I don't think this "absurd period" will end with Trump. I think our society has been irreversibly altered. By the way, the Dark Ages lasted for almost 1000 years.
