Commented on this one. We need independent people working for NSF/NIH/USDA/etc
There are only 14,393 comments submitted as of this moment! That's waaaay too few, considering the number of people who are affected by or rely on NIH/NSF funding.
🚨 Action alert: Two days left!!

Help protect NSF/NIH from political interference.

👎 A new rule (Sched. F) would allow for replacing career program officers with political appointees.

➡️ Action: Object here by THIS FRIDAY. Comments can be brief and/or anonymous. Helps future litigation.

This is an absolute disaster. If we don't stop this, they will turn NSF into a pawn of the Trump administration. There will be no research on climate, biodiversity, or anything that isn't eugenics or AI or how to more efficiently destroy the planet for profit.

This cannot be allowed to happen.

Harnessing the Farm Effect: Microbial Products for the Treatment and Prevention of Asthma Throughout Life
It has long been appreciated that farm exposure early in life protects individuals from allergic asthma. Understanding what component(s) of this exposure is responsible for this protection is crucial...

I am once again reminding other US citizens that there are American genocides still happening in our own backyard. I'm not saying not to be concerned about Gaza, but we will be more respected globally when we clean up our own house. As it is, we are hypocrites on the world stage.

Did you know there’s a whole spectrum of stuff in between “spend all weekend cleaning your house” and “don’t do anything at all because it’s so overwhelming”?

Wipe down one counter. Put away half a load of laundry. Vacuum one room. You can do a little bit, and it helps! And then you can stop!

Rest in Power Sam. We will bring your torturers to justice.
Please note the police are misgendering Sam Nordquist. One reason violence against trans men is invisible is because it's often treated as violence against women.
Yahoo [Feb 13] -- **TRIGGER WARNING**

NYS Police charged 5 people w/ violently assaulting 24 y/o Black trans man Sam Nordquist for a month before discarding his body in a field, describing it as "beyond depraved."

Rest In Peace, Sam. You are not forgotten.

Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings.

But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.
Direct Economic Contributions
NIH directly supports the economy through investments in research institutions and job formation.

The loss of AMERICAN science will have ripple effects on jobs and economic growth. At the same time China and other countries are investing heavily in science @schumer.senate.gov @nadler.house.gov
The NIH overhead cut doesn't just hurt universities.

It's deadly to the US economy.

The US is a world leader in tech due to the ecosystem that NIH and NSF propel. It drives innovation for tech transfer, creates a highly-skilled sci/tech workforce, and fosters academic/industry crossfertilization.
2. While NSF and NIH indeed have a mission to fund specific research innovations via grantmaking, they do a lot more than that.

Their principal role is support a scientific ecosystem in the United States, that includes everything from education and training to infrastructure and communication.

lolsob truth

plus the grant type (investigator-initiated R01 aka what a biomedical Sherlock Holmes needs to keep the lights on) has been devalued by >30 percent since I started my own lab

I get that times are hard all over, but staying alive by defeating disease is both virtuous and valuable
The NIH gets >50,000 applications for its primary grant type every year and it’s already so cash strapped that the success rate has only recently crept back over 20 percent. You could triple the NIH budget with money the Pentagon loses in the couch cushions and find plenty of worthy science to fund.

This is devastating news! The R01 supplement I received during my PhD training was crucial to supporting me during my PhD.
Research supplements to support URM mentees are set to expire today. I met the person who developed this mechanism, Clifton Poodry, at an NSF meeting last fall; he is so inspiring. This supplement has funded thousands of mentees including myself. Devasted to see it canceled, and with no notice.
