like, these people are just straightforwardly segregationists and, in the case of heather mac donald especially, gutter racists

ATTENTION VISUAL ARTISTS:

Chicago University's 'Nightshade 1.0' Learning Algorithm 'poison' filter is now live for public use:

Unlike 'Glaze', which only makes your art irreplicable, Nightshade actively damages any learning database it gets added to.

is it time to bust out my "bigfoot is bears" photo collection again? if your mental image of a bear is a thick-furred, fat glossy male bear in autumn, you're probably not prepared for how weird their proportions can look in spring, or when walking upright, like they frequently do.

You get your valentines yet?

Each card has an illustration & pun on one side, & a fact about the illustrated species on the other.

It's not just for kids. Hand 'em out to coworkers, neighbors, we ALL need squid facts.

They start shipping Jan 25th.

Colonization is, according to the oxford dictionary, the process of settling among and establishing control over the Indigenous people of an area. So decolonizing means unsettling, it means relinquishing control.

It does not mean cops in ribbon skirts or child welfare workers in orange shirts.

California State University (CSU) is the bedrock of public higher education in California. It's an unparalleled engine of upward mobility for the nearly 500,000 students (!) throughout the system, many of them first-gen or from minoritized groups.

The faculty make this miracle possible.

PAY THEM.

yknow maybe this should have been the big Harvard scandal rather than the plagiarism thing www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...
Harvard morgue theft ring stole body parts, sold brains and turned human flesh into leather
The suspects “stole dissected portions of donated cadavers, including, for example, heads, brains, skin, bones, and other human remains," an indictment says.

Fun Story: I dated someone whose dad was the President of a large CSU. They lived in a mansion overlooking town, had servants, none of them could cook for themselves, & everyone acted like a Schitt’s Creek character.

i eventually broke up with them because it was too weird.
And just learned that not only has management put the snitch form on the uni website, they've embedded it as a pop-up window in our Learning Management System to directly target our students and try to turn them against us.

Stunning development in scholarly publishing. NYPL will be digitizing "entire out-of-print backlists" of multiple academic presses and making them available.

The Scholarly Press Backlist Revival project shows a striking thoughtfulness in overcoming perceived and real IP and contractual barriers.
How the New York Public Library is navigating "challenges in providing access to one essential category of research materials: published monographs that are neither in the public domain nor commercially available for the library to purchase or license digitally." #FeedingTheElephant

in honor of the day, my favorite Star Trek story is the one about how Dr. King was the reason Nichelle Nichols didn’t quit after the first season because he told her how important it was for TV audiences to see a future where a Black woman engineer was right there on the bridge of that starship

Lots of other spending DOES correlate w/ lower crime, like funding mental health services, disability services, education, health care, affordable housing, child nutrition & care, public transit, job training, even urban tree planting! Trees reduce temperature which reduces crime. So many ways work!

Spotted this sign on a toilet at Gatwick yesterday.

I like seeing these words in public spaces. A great reminder and educator.

P.s. It would be good to see this phrase in supermarket car parks where people using the disabled spaces are sadly often harassed.
