This has been a good year of immersing myself in Ojibwe stories, and we're going to circle back to stories of creation and flood in 2026 by spending some time with the idea of earth divers, with wondering instead of answering.

I think it’s important to insist on recalling, at all available opportunities, that this was specifically an attack on a trans instructor over an assignment about gender. Neither of those details are incidental; they are the center of the story
If you’re wondering why your friends in academia are a little on edge right now, it’s because an eighteen-year-old who hasn’t done the reading, doesn’t look at the assignment, and has does no critical thinking skills more complex than “because I think it’s in the Bible” can literally end your career

This is a great analogy for jargon and why it's not terrible, but also need to consider who you are talking/writing to and why you need that word instead of another. We've all been that person who doesn't get most of the jokes. It's a horrible isolating feeling. Don't do that to people.
Totally agree! I always teach my students about theory by starting with the idea of an in-joke that you have with friends—one word or phrase that brings a whole package with it.

There's a real aversion to learning social theory. And i get it. A lot of theory is written in a dense, inaccessible way (looking at you Coulthard) which doesn't help.

I was honestly amazed this didn't happen to Ahmed so I'm unsurprised.
Everyone knows about Ahmed al-Ahmad, the Syrian Muslim migrant who took down one gunman. Another man, a Middle Eastern refugee, ran into a firefight and kicked the gun away from the other gunman. Police shot him, and bystanders kicked him in the head while he was down, thinking he was the terrorist.
