This week on the blog: hoplites! In particular, hoplite equipment! We talk shields, helmets, armor, weight and mobility.

Was the hoplite an over-encumbered battlefield turtle incapable of fighting outside of the phalanx? (No)

Was he actually a good skirmisher? (Also no)

This is the second part of what looks like it’ll be end up as a four part series discussing the debates surrounding ancient Greek hoplites, the heavy infantry of the Archaic (800-480) and Cla…

Oui, would Marx ever support sending French soldiers to fight and die to defend Eastern Ukraine from Russian dominance? Of course not. Now to take a big sip of absinthe and read his opinion on the Crimean War.

GOP SEN. JOHN KENNEDY: It may be 2026 when we'll come out of the shutdown.

REPORTERS: 😳

KENNEDY: I'm not kidding, you guys. I mean, you see what I see. Okay? This shutdown is going to last a long time. What's going to get us out of it?

Generally the dumbest political analysis you’ll ever see this deep into the Trump years will be from someone claiming “Trump is easy to beat”
Insane disqualifying cope to say he is a bad politician. How many times do you need to see him survive several things every week that would destroy every other politician’s career? External factors/bad opposition can’t explain that.

the Fascism Knowers all fleeing the country to whine from foreign lands was just another type of elite capitulation. i hope they enjoy their employment elsewhere because i am disinclined to offer it back to them should they return.
Jason Stanley isn’t afraid to use the F-word when talking about President Donald Trump.

The author of How Fascism Works and Erasing History: How Fascists Rewrite the Past to Control the Future is clear: He believes the US is currently under an authoritarian regime led by a fascist leader.
I study fascism. I’ve already fled America.
On this week’s “More To The Story,” former Yale philosophy professor Jason Stanley explains his recent move to Canada and calls the Trump administration’s takeover of the US government a “coup.”

there’s a thing here about for the last decade or so, online people have been very negative about small talk - the weather, or local news, or whatever - and small talk is the grease that keeps physical interactions going, and i am tired of ceding that to shut-ins
i say thank you to the bus driver when i get on and yell thank you when i get off every day i ride the bus, and i take two buses to and from work, being nice and friendly costs you nothing and should be your default expectation for yourself because it improves your day and everyone else’s day
Being nice to people is just fun. Asked young server at taco place how her day was going (fine but tired) and she asked me back. I said I managed to finish my to-do list and she unexpectedly gave me a high five! Treating people like people is always rewarding.

Soft as shit PMC dudes insisting that the future of Dem politics is not PMC and PMC adjacent feminine coded jobs but rather white men in hard hats is a non-zero portion of why we continue to be in this mess
i think i would honestly find this whole discourse more tolerable if people simply said what they were actually saying, which is that they think the Democratic Party is too associated with femininity (and secondarily, with black people) and that they want to correct this

ppl are bringing up food banks and yea absolutely you should give generously to food banks and panhandlers but like you cant mutual aid state capacity. If every food bank in the us got their annual revenue already, saved 100% of it, and no overhead besides food they might be able to provide 2 months
40 odd million people use SNAP. 7 million WIC. food banks are already way down because of funding cuts. It’s going to be catastrophic
I want more people to care that SNAP benefits are being cut off on November 1. 40% of SNAP beneficiaries are children. This is callous and vile.

A bus of Bronx middle schoolers pulled up to the Capitol this morning for a long-planned field trip just a few hours after the government shut down.

All Capitol tours were cancelled as the guides can’t work in shutdown.

So I escorted them in myself and gave them a personal tour. They were great!
