And here the Secretary of State is complaining that people are taking seriously what the president says. This, of course, goes without any commentary from the journalists. We all need to pretend it's normal that the SoS is asking us to ignore POTUS in the midst of a national security crisis.

@nytimes.com way of saying, these guys have not really thought things through and are making shit up on the fly.

And...claim legal authority you don't have; focus more on the perception and symbolism than on the intricate details.

By now, journalists should have learned how to deal with government officials claiming they didn't know or hear about nutty things that Trump said or did.
WELKER: Does the pardon of the former Honduran president undercut the admin's stated goal to go after these narcoterrorists?

RUBIO: I don't do the pardon file. I'm not against it or for it. I just didnt review the file so I can't speak to you about the dynamics that led POTUS to make that decision

I assumed they must have had a bulletproof deal with a dominant part of the current regime that has a firm grip on the military and police. But as the hours pass, it seems more likely they overestimated the "assurances" they received.

“Non interventionist” MAGA is not going to turn on Trump because of Venezuela. This operation aligns with their vision of dividing the word into spheres of control/ influence. They don’t think this is anything like wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Joe - we are always to be blamed for everything. Tiring.

It's maddening that we all know that part of Trump's interest in regime change is self-enrichment.

Good thread!
1/10 🧵 The U.S. just captured a sitting head of state in a military operation—and Trump says the U.S. will "run" Venezuela “for now.” Whatever you think of Maduro, this is the most consequential unilateral move in the hemisphere since Panama (1989).

Re Venezuela -- With this corrupt administration, it’s increasingly unclear where U.S. interests end, and Trump’s personal interests begin.

It's not complicated for democratic leaders to state that ...
(a) While Maduro is a vicious dictator who stole the last election,
(b) The world is less safe when countries feel they have a right to invade neighboring countries and kidnap their presidents without probable cause.

Prof. Saunders - you are a national treasure. Thanks for sharing these thoughts!

How dare a president of a sovereign state conspire to possess machine guns?
The US Attorney General confirms Maduro is being charged with "conspiracy to possess machine guns" - something Republicans usually call a constitutional right.

How can the US government be a legitimate mediator in peace talks between Russia and Ukraine when it holds that superpowers have the right to invade other countries and pluck out their president for no good reason?
The time to make this "decision" was long before removing Maduro.
FOX & FRIENDS: What do you think is next for the Venezuelan people now that you have removed Maduro so he can face American justice?

TRUMP: Well, we're making that decision now. We can't take a chance on letting somebody else run it, just take over where he left off. So we're making that decision

Congrats Anna! Can’t wait to read your timely book.

And antisemitic.

I'm old enough to remember the attacks on Obama because of his association with Rev Jeremiah Wright, who said something something about state-supported violence.
Curtis Yarvin, JD Vance’s friend & ideological influence, ended 2025 by claiming “only Hitler spoke the truth” about “too many subjects” & “Hitler was a genius.”

Extremism isn’t fringe on the right. Once marginal online extremists like Yarvin are influential at the highest levels of government.

A reminder that in 1649, the English Parliament tried and convicted King Charles I for treason against his own people, but in the 2020s, SCOTUS put President Trump above the law.
Jack Smith: I believe we had proof beyond a reasonable doubt in both cases.

He understands us. He represents us He is commuted to bringing prices down.
after bidding $100,000 for a painting during an auction at Mar-a-Lago, Trump describes $2 million as "peanuts" for another bidder and the painting eventually goes for over $2.5 million

and rename the Kennedy Center...

The silver lining of his genuine obsession with his legacy is that it's clear he knows deep down that he is no longer the president after the 2028 elections.
Congress should stop this.

Also, if Trump wants to enjoy an imitation of the Arc de Triomphe done in a style and at a place congenial to him, he can visit the Arch of Triumph in Pyongyang, completed in 1982.

Trump says construction of the ‘Triumphal Arch’ to begin in ‘2 months’
The monument would be a centerpiece of the White House’s plans for America’s 250th birthday.
