Spent my 40s so far doing a lot of running after avoiding it for years, and it has been one of the best things to happen to me mentally and physically.
not gonna evangelize about it but tbh coming to understand the value of cardio is one of the biggest positive changes I've made of any kind to my adult life, for whatever that's worth
Fitness gurus are always knocking cardio. Well, the elliptical is super effectively for weight loss. It’s low impact so you can do it for long time periods, every day. I can burn 800-1000 calories in an hour. I can do it daily. I lost 100 lbs once doing nothing but that damned boring elliptical.

Artists must hold true to the most important principle of all: performing for anyone who gives them money
"Any artist cancelling their show at the Trump Kennedy Center over political differences isn't courageous or principled—they are selfish, intolerant, and have failed to meet the basic duty of a public artist: to perform for all people"- Kennedy Center spokesperson Roma Daravi
Kennedy Center vows to sue musician who canceled performance over Trump name change
The Kennedy Center is planning legal action after jazz musician Chuck Redd canceled an annual holiday concert. Redd pulled out after President Trump's name appeared on the building.

Here’s the Ric Grenell letter to Chuck Redd. Because Grenell can’t help himself, he insists that Redd’s withdrawal was “very costly” to the Kennedy Center while also alleging “dismal ticket sales” and “the public’s lack of interest in your show.”

"The basic duty of a public artist: to perform for all people" is something they obviously have thought too deeply about.

Important reporting. All of these impossible registry requirements do nothing to help victims and only make us less safe.
NEW: beginning january 1, chicago will ban unhoused people on the sex offense registry from seeking shelter on public transit.

it’s the latest in a concerted effort by mayor johnson’s admin to criminalize homelessness on cta trains + buses and in public parks during the coldest months of the year.

In my neighborhood, non-voters have often told me they don't vote because "they don't do anything for me anyway."
There are a lot of people who sit out elections bc they have never personally experienced improvements in their lives they can readily link to election outcomes. Mutual aid could be a good on-ramp for some of them.

We got a Housing for All Pope!
“Pope Leo said in a Christmas Eve sermon on Wednesday that the story of Jesus being born in a stable because there was no room at an inn should remind Christians that refusing to help the poor & strangers today is tantamount to rejecting God himself.”

Obvious to any REAL Christian. #MerryChristmas

I don’t mean to sound extreme, but I don’t think we should have torture camps for people with criminal records either.

"The defining characteristic of any concentration camp is one that detains civilians en masse without due process on the basis of race, ethnicity, or supposed affiliation, rather than for any crime an individual has committed. Governments use them for political ends, to gather and keep power."
I wrote for New York magazine about deportations to CECOT in El Salvador, which are bound up with a tradition of US extrajudicial actions in the Americas and further the long arc of concentration camps.

Added bonus: A dear friend keeps me subscribed to two magazines. Every time they arrive, I have occasion to think of him and to remember our friendship across distance.
I’ve wanted to brag about my Christmas gift last year and here’s my chance.

I got the whole family matching magazine subs! Adults got Southern Cultures, OA, Bitter Southerner, The Sun, & New Yorker. Kid got Lux, Oyla, and later we added The Onion.

We always have stuff to talk about!
I got out of the habit of reading magazines bc of the social pressure of writers reading what's trendy/popular or frankly expected of you.

This year, I've dedicated myself back to reading magazines and I'm truly having the time of my life.
