Happy New Year, start it off smiling with this golden oldie
4 yrs ago today, a family member managed a truly spectacular own goal, splintered his domestic bliss, & in the process, united the world for a day.

On popular request, I shall now recreate the livetweet thread from that day

So gather around children, for this is the tale of The Rice Truck Saga

Oh yeah, this post reminds me I haven't mentioned that I've just started learning clarinet. Total beginner. I find that I keep trying to default to sax fingerings, so I'm training myself not to. Fun challenge... well, fun for me. Maybe not for those within earshot of my practice room!
Here's a #caricature group by 18th-century society portraitist Joshua Reynolds, dating to around 1751.

It shows two Englishmen performing an impromptu concert for two friends, in view of Rome’s Pyramid of Cestius. Painted by Reynolds for private amusement, not public consumption...sadly.

The Holocaust, the Armenian genocide, and so many modern atrocities began the same way.

Sorting entire groups of people into camps is complex, and hard. It will ALWAYS turn into chaos because evil people are also incompetent. Historians aren't wrong if they say this is how it always goes.

One tune I've been working up lately. I've been curious about Lee Morgan for a while, and I'm working my way through the Real Book and hit this tune, which finally got me to digging. Ceora's just a great, great tune.

ICE detain father shopping on Christmas Eve—then steal his family's groceries.

Then 3 agents divvy up his paid for food—taking what they want for themselves.

"Can I just get the wife's number to call and let her know?" woman asks.

"No, guess he should've complied," agent says.

Really I just think we should always be skeptical of "survival of the fittest" bro types who love to fantasize a brutal past. But we know it can't have been that because we have love, justice, morality. Those aren't new, soft things. They're as evolved as teeth.

The problem is not having ideas. The problem is that billionaires, are sitting like dragons on gold, on the stolen wealth of ordinary people's efforts - leaving them no time or energy to sit, work through, refine, and implement their ideas into books, music, film, and visual art.

So, obviously everyone's clowning on this article, which I will not post (they love hate clicks more than anything, don't fall for it), but here's my question: Who's "we"?

Ideas--even good ideas--are cheap. I already have more ideas for books than I will ever be able to write.

The worst AI apologists are the ones who see that it's not wanted and is a huge problem but still advocate for it as if it'll save our lives rather than destroy creativity and create an entire generation unable to do even simple writing or research because they ceded learning through practice to AI.
