So I looked at the OFFICIAL first english chapter of Gundam Wing PREVERNTER-7

Big tech promotes the story that since ChatGPT burst onto the scene, AI has been so popular it's rushed to meet the demand. The reality is different. A study by design scholars shows tech co's have had to push AI on its users with a variety of intrusive tactics.

How big tech is force-feeding us AI:

OKAY as compensation for them triggering my PTSD with my specific archnemesis helicopter I have yoinked aerial footage of #NoKings Chapel Hill from ABC 11. This many blocks of people from summer in a college town/area with about 80k population when combined with Carrboro.

Someone just asked me about getting started as a literary translator and I realized I already have kind of a starter pack of content to help emerging translators.

First, how to get rights to a book you want to translate:

English is way harsher on repetition than Japanese, so part of a light novel translator's job is tweaking the wording so it says the same shit, but without sounding redundant.
I thought I'd do a rundown of a few tricks that help with this.

Already in love with this, starting with the title.
Cover for volume one of Kaoru Kitamura and Yasuto Miura’s “Becky-san to Watashi.”

Based on Kitamura’s award winning mystery novel series. Eiko, daughter of an upper class samurai family, and Becky a female chauffeur disguised as a man sove mysteries in showa era Tokyo.

Runs in Big Comic.

“A human artist will research the material properly, with all the nuances of human emotion and logic, and ultimately produce art assets that are historically accurate, game specific and have soul”.

I know I keep harping on about this, but this really is what good human game localization does too.

This is a really interesting illustration of how the limitations of subtitling and dubbing affect localization choices! -- super quick thread! 🧵

As always, the question is: How do translators and adaptors make the decision to localize cultural references?
I keep bouncing between the sub and dub scripts for watakon because they're both weird in their own ways but never in my 200 years watching anime have I seen this one (left sub, right dub, no I didn't get them backwards)

Do you know why a president would do all the most evil and heinous shit via Executive Order? Because his party can't easily make it law. And if they can't make it law, they can't make it last.

Don't let anyone make you feel like this is The End. Do not let them demoralize you. Live to see them die.

As a writing studies person & academic (😬), I’ve honestly felt embarrassed & disappointed at how some teacher-scholars seem inclined to make peace w/ AI, trying to teach it rather than calling it out as fundamentally unethical.

But here’s an article arguing for resistance & not giving an inch.
Burn it down: a license for AI resistance (opinion)
