Reminder that, unless a creative freelancer has a spouse with a day job that offers health insurance, they likely have an ACA plan. And with the hits to creative industries the past few years, I'm guessing many qualify for subsidies.
Related reminder that comic creators are freelancers.

The average SNAP benefit per month is $177 a person.
The average ACA benefit per month is up to $550 a person.
People want us to hold the line for a reason. This is not a matter of appealing to a base. It’s about people’s lives.
And working people want leaders whose word means something to them.

Sometimes I wonder if our many years of jokes about writers hating writing and doing anything but writing, etc, have convinced people that the writing part is the hurdle and the goal is just to have a thing in hand. But I am here to tell you: the writing is the best part. The act is the thing.

You cannot run the basic infrastructures of a functioning society- healthcare to education-on systems that cut out human empathy & negotiation. So we have to reassert over and over again that the problems aren’t glitches or errors—even big ones. The problems are fundamental, systematic, endemic.

Identifying flaws in GenAI unfortunately offers a pretext for claims that perfecting the product is just a matter of time & money. So pointing to chatbots’ role in,say, suicides can only go so far if we don’t also identify the systemic, irresolvable lack of Gen AI’s human commitment bc math has none

I bet some will say it opens up the world to diverse stories from all over. But don't fall for that. Machine translations (AI or not) for literature devoids it from all cultural significance, homogeneizes authoral voices, and introduce errors. In the end, you won't have diversity at all.

This is disgusting! If you use are an author and use it, I'll never read anything you publish. And if you're a reader and knowingly read something translated this way, I'm sorry that your standards are so low and I'm certain you won't have a good experience with it.

half of it is slavery. the model it all comes from is white men know how to run things, and all mistakes come from the servant class being unable to realize the vision. it's colonialism, it's chattel slavery, it's deskilled labor, it's the auteur. property as exclusion, power as the right to exclude
Once you start thinking of AI as a war on humanity, on human thought, on human inquiry, on human labor, on nuance and critical thinking, it slots in pretty seamlessly with the right wing ideological project, oligarchical political projects, big tech's political projects, etc
