Why do people want 'more access'?

Yes, it's another THREAD! 🧵

This time about ancient monuments and how and why to get our grubby hands on them.

So this queer bookshop has a 'Pay it Forward' scheme where you can buy someone else a book they might need but can't afford. A nice thing to do for Christmas.

thebookishtype.co.uk/collections/...
Sorry to say we're closed today (Tuesday) 😔
Someone has bricked our window, robbed the cash drawer and, bizarrely, the Bluetooth speaker 🎶

All the books are safe! Turns out robbers dont read. If you wanna help out this struggling queer bookshop our website is still open

Merry bloody Christmas 😥

Hey look! A list of shops to avoid.

A brief thread on alt-text.

Alt text is descriptive text that conveys the meaning of an image. It's designed to make visual content accessible to people with vision disabilities. When a person uses assistive technology such as a screen reader, the screen reader will read the onscreen text aloud 1/7

The fact that 'Worcester' is pronounced 'Wooster' is wild.

But have you ever seen the five-syllable Old English name it stems from?

'Weogornaċeaster'.

It meant "fortified settlement of the Weogoran (a Saxon tribe)".

Click to hear a reconstruction of its pronunciation:

we're living through a fast-paced technological revolution around green energy and it's getting about 1% of the attention it should. In a month, no one's gonna be burning coal in the UK for the first time since the steam engine was invented.
What a journey!

10 years ago almost 40% of UK electricity was from coal.

Today the UK's last remaining coal-fired power station is Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station in Nottinghamshire, England, which is scheduled to close on September 30, 2024.

I made this Pride flag using only NASA images and our team thought it would be cool to share on social (I work on the NASA heliophysics communications team), but it's getting all sorts of hate on the bird app and Fbook. Thought y'all might be more appreciative of it here. ☺️🏳️‍🌈💖

My favourite line on reviews ever is GK Chesterton:

“Most reviews say, in effect, ‘this is a very fine plum pudding but there is no taste of salmon’.”
My absolute pet peeve as a critic is how fucking often critics do this instead of, you know, reviewing the book the author actually wrote.
Basically the reviewer complaining "Why didn't the author write about a different subject to the one they did?"

Google apparently had to release a "verbatim" setting so that you can get decent search results. I tested it and it does seem to help

How to Make Google Show You the Good Search Results Again
Off-target search results are getting more and more common, and we can only lay part of the blame on the results being cluttered with AI-generated junk and human-generated SEO-bait. I don’t have a fix...
