Maybe you could make that case for today, but I guess I'm holding out hope that even this will have more people figuring out how they could strike, not deciding that it's impossible.

I really want people to check in with the organizations that have been pushing back on surveillance for 10+ years.

Just to be blunt, there are a lot of folks who realized yesterday that surveillance is bad and many are suggesting well-intentioned but misguided strategies for fighting it

talk to us
“Agents can identify people on the street through facial recognition, trace their movements through license-plate readers and, in some cases, use commercially available phone-location data to reconstruct daily routines and associations.” All surveillance tools people have pushed back on for ages…
DHS ramps up surveillance in immigration raids, sweeping in citizens
The Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in Minneapolis is providing insights into the surveillance technologies the government is using in its mass deportation campaign.

Today is Fred Korematsu Day so it seems appropriate to remind everyone that putting people in concentration camps based on their ethnicity and nationality is wrong and whatever you convict you of today they will be wrong always.
BIG news from @bloomberg.com, which confirms that ICE has gone ahead and *purchased* multiple commercial warehouses with the aim of converting them into mass detention camps.

This is likely to be the big detention story of 2026 — literal warehousing of people.

the weird perp walk stuff they've tried to pull is a good example of this. it is *far* more important to them to produce those posts than it is to successfully go through a legal process (or say, be legally appointed to the job they claim to have).

“What if someone adds a bad actor in disguise to the Signal chat” is a *social* problem that *literally cannot be solved by any messaging app*.
i can confirm the chats I’m in which include renowned security specialists - people who actually advise on how to protect your comms from authoritarian dictators for a living - also think this outburst of paranoia about Signal is really weird and unwarranted
every Signal chat of laypeople is losing their minds over the wildest opsec advice imaginable and every Signal chat of security professionals is like “dude wtf”

The vast majority of problems can be avoided by not being foolish, being aware of your surroundings, and using common sense

The good news is that the Trump regime has an incredibly limited repertoire of responses (repression, attack, etc) which will increasingly cause backfire.

The bad news is that Trump is stuck in a cycle of repression where increasing backfire causes more need to repress and attack.
the practical effect of arresting lemon et al is to spark widespread condemnation, especially since these arrests will certainly be thrown out. this doesn't mean the action isn't a dangerous escalation, it does mean the white house doesn't know what to do but spam its only attack

The freedom of the press is literally inscribed into the constitution. The arrests of Georgia Fort and Don Lemon, layered atop the raid of that WaPo journalist's home earlier this month are clearly political acts designed to silence journalists, and create a chilling effect on free speech.
