The Joyce Carol Oates and “books written between 1890-1930 are so ALPHA” thing struck home because it showed how many elites nowadays lack the ability to be moved or find meaning in art beyond what we did watching John Wick and going fuck yea this rules and that explains why they believe in AI art

I don't know if I ever expected to be excited about news about the transition team for the mayor of a city in which I do not live.

The solution to the male loneliness epidemic is attending a local Democratic Party canvassing event.
WOW. 81% of women 18-29 voted for Mamdani, 80% for Sherril, and 78% for Spanberger.

Gen Z women aren't playing around.

It can often feel like there's a whole lot outside our control.

But if there's any kind of election in your town today, that's a way to make a meaningful difference in your state or local affairs.
Today I’m voting for school board. Keep the local MAGA out. Keep the ABA teacher with no real information about her out too (IYKYK).

Your local election for boards and judges and funding and so forth really do matter. Go vote!

As soon as I saw the news I thought: Oh Bluesky is going to be great today and y'all haven't disappointed.

It's not even 8am EST. 🤌

Hi. It's election day.

From this election worker who will happily work a 17-hour day today so that you can have the opportunity:

Please go vote.

And remember, your local municipal and county races are arguably the most important ones. They affect what you deal with every day.

I tend to agree with this. If AI works like its cheerleaders claim/hope it will - replacing whole swathes of human labour - then they need a real economic plan for dealing with the consequences of that. This can only mean heavily redistributing the profits.
you either need universal basic income for humans or you must limit the use of Gen AI in such a way that humans aren’t radically impoverished as a result.

you cannot have both, both for morality reasons and also because this is the kind of thing that can result in globally-nightmarish conflict.
This seems more like an argument for universal basic income than for limiting technology. (I think both are probably futile in the current political environment, but I’d prefer the latter.)

Literally the first nightmares I remember having.

Honestly, fuck these guys.
I gotta say, of all the things that I thought people could be nostalgic for about the 70s and 80s, the constant fear of nuclear devastation was not one of them!

I think that one of the saddest things about hustle culture is that appreciation of a rainy fall day is reduced to Pumpkin Spice in the office Keurig while checking Twitter instead of orange leaves drifting through cool damp air accompanied by the twittering of birds.

it’s an innovative new strategy called irreparable harm and it’s the one weird trick judges just can’t beat
By proceeding with the demolition of the White House East Wing before seeking approval from federal agencies for a new ballroom, President Donald Trump forced the issue. It's a strategy known as "stake-driving."
How Trump Demolished the White House East Wing
By putting the demolition of the East Wing before the necessary approvals for his ballroom, President Donald Trump borrowed a tactic known as “stake-driving” to force an outcome.

Extremely important thread.
State and local governments. I can't overstate how important it is for Dems to contest every state legislative race, in every district, everywhere

You live in Wyoming in an R+25 district? Run a Dem anyway. In an Alabama R+50? Run a Dem. Electing a dog catcher in MS? Run

How best can democracy survive if Democrats can't flip both House and Senate in 2026?

(I know: dumbass unknowable question. Curious to hear you riff on it, though.)
