I hope that what council took from this is that affordability is an issue that goes much deeper than just the tax rate. When they’re debating cutting services, I hope they remember they might also be severing trust.

we seem to have a council that doesn't think these changes will affect "people who matter." in reality, these cuts will reduce everyone's quality of life because research shows limiting accessible social services creates hardship that destroys social cohesion.
The list of things council is considering cutting in order to keep taxes “flat” is insane. (From Sam Austin’s website). Call your councillor and tell them you won’t support them if they support these cuts.

What doesn’t seem to be on the table: it’s obvious the existing scheme of having the urban core pay for suburban sprawl, and have new home owners and renters pay more taxes than long-time home owners isn’t working. But they will try literally anything but fixing that

I’ve started a slack to try to organize Halifax Regional Municipality 2026 budget advocacy better. We’re specifically pushing for fiscal sustainability and actual serious consideration of revenue, and against frivolous nickel and diming, and want to organize letter writing and council presentations.

I'm at the point in my life where I'm happy to pay a little extra for a little more legroom. I want the tax version of that!
The great thing about taxes? Small monthly payment gets you cool, useful stuff.
It's like, dunno, a subscription for some of the nice features of living in a city?

This is what kills me about all of this: property taxes aren't that big an expense for me at the end of the day and TBH I wouldn't even mind paying more if it meant we could live in a better city. But louder voices are happy to burn it all down just to save a buck

#hfxws 1/2: I rode from Flinn Park to the Brewery Market & back this morning.
Protected bike lanes (South Park, Lower Water, Hollis, Brunswick & Rainnie) have icy patches, from surrounding snowbanks melt and refreeze. SP has some icy snow boulders. LW has sections with hard packed snow and ice.

I want to see a pie chart of budget operating costs showing the infinitessimal slice that is library/ transit/ bike network completion.
Then I want the time spent debating converted to cost in salaries on the nearly invisible slice. Maybe include the salary costs of redundant staff reports.
