omg I was literally thinking about the cdrama yesterday and how I cried more than I've ever cried for a drama during this part
oh oh oh no sorry ONE MORE THING i have to tell you about hikago, and that's this:

After the manga/show became popular, professional Go clubs in Japan and Korea started leaving an empty seat at their official Go tournaments for Fujiwara no Sai <3

You can tell who did and who did not moderate IRC/phpBB/whatever back in the day, because all of us who did learned the true shape of online group culture:

your culture is the shittiest person you don't ban
yeah, it is entirely possible to have a Normal Functional Discord!
I have to tell you, it's been a little depressing seeing all the "never join the Discord" shit going around. My little Bohemian art/poetry/support server is awesome, and I don't even want to share it here anymore.

TBH I'm surprised how few people remember Hurricane Sandy - they had buses replacing the subway & it was an incredible mess, even though far fewer people than usual were even attempting to travel.
I often wonder to what degree the astonishingly huge capacity of subways has percolated out from transit nerd circles. NYC subways can quite easily hold 2000 people per train! Like, Aaron's point would still pretty much hold if there were five thousand people taking the train and fifty in ubers

Current estimates say that every prompt you give a generative "AI" system— not each session, every PROMPT— is like pouring a 16 oz bottle of water onto the ground.

This is a fact that goes somewhere in every talk i give, now, & i always see audience members looking it up… and then looking horrified
Annoyed by articles that go into great detail about what companies say they're doing with so-called "A.I." but do not ask what companies are doing about the technology's ecological impact.

If you never watch live sports, you can't understand how insane the marketing for online sports gambling is right now. Imagine tuning in to a local news broadcast, and having the meteorologist spend 10 minutes talking about different ways to bet on today's weather, and which weather bet will pay off
The amount of money and effort currently being invested in trying to addict young people to gambling in the USA can only be compared to when Philip Morris actively targeted 10 year olds to have active customers for the next 40
"why are men so stupid they do cryptocurrency and sports gambling" i feel like im losing my fucking mind. there was a multiyear advertising campaign for all of this shit, directly targeted at young men, on every platform ever created!!!

Lynn discussed her decision to have an openly gay character in her strip, and that decision’s consequences, in her interview in Hogan’s Alley #1. You haven’t read this interview? Well, grab another cup of coffee and settle in: www.hoganmag.com/blog/the-lyn...

In Lynn Johnston’s “For Better or for Worse,” supporting character Lawrence Poirier came out on March 26, 1993. (It might not seem like a big deal nowadays, but it was a seismic event on the comics pages of the 1990s.) That coming-out sequence:

I know this is a year after the original Discourse but I was talking to my BIL (programmer) and my sister (stats PhD, teaches R to undergrads) about how apparently people don't learn about file folders anymore

me @ my sister: but remember how you kept all your anime in a SINGLE folder in 2001!!!
