I was going to try to say…something about the year behind us and the year ahead but I couldn’t think of anything better than this post I have thought of often over the past challenging year.
A soft, small, hopeful thing.

I was walking with my then-small child in Edinburgh, and I let the kiddo spit on the Heart of Midlothian, as is tradition. This caused a roar of delight from a Spanish-language walking tour nearby. From the guide’s proud gestures, I believe we had just illustrated his point at the perfect moment.
Please quote this with stories of your minor interactions with non-celebrities, e.g. “I once accidentally bumped into a man in the Wellingborough branch of Holland & Barrett”

Either my citizenship is the same as yours, or what's the fucking point
Ask this question and its follow-up. Like Begum before him, Alaa el-Fattah is being used as a crowbar to shift reasonable people - even some progressives - into a space of thinking that full citizenship, if granted recently or dual, is retroactively conditional or attracts a lower class of rights.

This combined with this Government’s extraordinary attacks on the right to protest is especially chilling. They really have everything they need here to exercise absolute control over the population.

I have always said it, I will continue to say it, we are limiting the productive potential of millions of freaks by demanding they earn a wage to survive instead of enabling them to do whatever thing their brain is broken for

Gonna be thinking about this for a while.
Cruelty is anhedonic. It rarely delivers the euphoria promised because, in the abstract, what feels righteous and joyful inevitably reveals itself to be sordid and small. Then it's "No not like that". "No not enough". "No the real battle, the forever war to make this feel good starts now". Forever.
Note how these awful people are getting exactly the exclusions of children that they demanded and *that still isn’t enough for them*: they demand everyone be delighted about it and kiss their arses for being brilliant.

Remarkable reporting and writing.
NEW: Without USAID funding to help buy food for refugees, the World Food Program rushed to prioritize families based on need, determining that only half the population would get food.

Refugees learned which half they were in from a number stamped on the back of their ration card.

The comorbidity of neo-Nazism and transphobia isn't just a kind of "one bad belief leads to all bad beliefs". At its core, it's the same belief: belief in a rigid societal order where your station at birth determines your future, your role, and how you must labor.

A belief in biodestiny, in short.
Today, I examine how the boundaries of the Nation are co-constituted by race, disability, and sexuality, but also---notably---gender and control over reproduction.

And ask everyone to stop saying transfeminism is 'imperialist'. For fuck's sake.

Used to work at a campground in the Santa Cruz mountains, and one night I surprised a whole family of raccoons in the trash cans behind the cafeteria. Well, I was surprised. They just kind of stared at me, peeking out with trash can lids for hats.

I can’t stop thinking about Luke Kemp’s Goliath’s Curse. There is nothing more destabilising than wealth inequality, and the more top-heavy we get, the more fragile we are. Only now instead of just one region it’ll be the whole world that falls.
