Reading federalist 10 with students this week- the whole point was that to prevent this you need a lot of parties/factions so one can’t take over. We failed.
In a functional party system, this kind of capitulation in the face of authoritarianism could mean the end of the Democratic Party.
In our system, it could mean the end of the two party system. Neither party can represent the pro-democracy majority. It's time for something new.

I am taking a pottery class this winter and I cannot recommend strongly enough doing something where it is simply impossible to doomscroll. Swimming also has the same bonus- forced separation from this glowing horror screen.

Today’s AP gov topic: checks and balances.
Lotta good not terrifying at all real world scenarios out there for them to consider. 🫠

Call senator Welch- he’s one of the “gang of 8” for some unfathomable reason (our other VT delegation need to have some words with him!)

Sounds like the squishes in the senate caucus are ready to pull the plug with no ACA changes. This is real. If you want to register your opinion you shld call yr senator in the next hour. They not only want to reopen w/nothing. They want cover from their colleagues who still want to hold out.

Hero jury saves democracy gone a-rye
Jury nullification is good and it's a good sign for America's path out of authoritarianism that juries are recognizing their power to nullify.

More sandwich guy puns please. Be Like Tal (on sourdough please.
the fact that Sandwich Guy is facing this 'wich trial at all is evidence of subpar justice. he is a hero being put through the judicial grinder. i hope the jury wraps up a not guilty verdict without delay or loafing around

I am a new advisor to high school mock trial and I would love to use this as a practice case. No one would believe it isn’t a goofy practice case that a teacher made up. Assault by sandwich! Sounds like the witnesses are ripe (avocados) for impeaching!
Day 3 of the “no more than 2” day trial of Sandwich Guy. The prosecution intends to rest; the defense hasn’t decided yet. Dispute over jury instructions continues, a few morsels (sorry) to follow.

17 years ago today, my friends and I were watching as Obama got elected, sobbing and chain-smoking cigarettes, waxing poetic about the first Black president.
In hindsight, it is a privilege to have believed in something so completely. I’ll never fault the person I was who believed in hope & change.

This is not entirely Augustine’s fault but
actually… it mostly is.
actually… it mostly is.
This is funny but not entirely a joke. Research finds the moralism of religious people is harsher about breaches of conventional sexuality/reproductive issues than breaches of prosocial morality; "conservative stances toward sex are close to the core of what it means to be religious."

The kids are into it again. My students cringed 3-5 years ago. Now they know the lyrics and want me to show it. I had to break it to them that they had been lied to by a musical (that I think is genius as musical theater, not history) (I also know all the lyrics and have seen it in NYC and on tour)
are we allowed to talk about how Hamilton is good again yet or is that still, like, off limits
