In honor of being put on a science communicators list, I thought I’d bring back my most popular science communication thread from Twitter, before I never go there again.

This was in response to Ted Cruz asking AOC “what, exactly, is a Y chromosome?”

Hey, I lost a bunch of followers when I reposted this last night, so this morning I'm ordering MORE boxes and reposting it again!
Hey everyone!

Huge news! Our trans girl scout list has sold a total of 146,000 boxes as of today!

But MANY trans girl scouts only have 20, 30, 40 boxes sold.

I just resorted our list to put those on the top.

Go get your girl scout cookies and make a trans kid's day!
2026 Trans Girl Scouts To Order Cookies From!
This year, consider ordering your Girl Scout cookies from a trans girl scout to make their day!

When we all finally accept that the rights ideology is all about accumulation of power, things will be both easier and harder.

Easier because it’s helpful to actually know what you’re fighting. Harder because a lot of people aren’t going to believe it until it’s nearly too late.

I woke up feeling ready to scrap again.

I got some really good advice in grad school for dealing with setbacks and it still works: give yourself the rest of the day to mourn and really feel your feelings—be a caricature, wallow, use all your coping mechanisms. Go to bed, dust off, and move on.

My runs are designed to avoid crossing streets as much as possible, and I almost never cross at a crosswalk because "jaywalking" is actually safer. It's easier to see people coming.

Because people driving cars just don't care whether they run you down. (They don't even see you, often.)
It's unsettling how traffic violence is reported in the US. If the driver was going this street's speed limit of 25mph, there's a 90% chance this woman would be alive. But that's unmentioned. The driver was "cooperative." There will be no follow up. There will be no convictions. A life is lost.

If you are a customer of any of these companies, let them know you are opposed to their doing business with ICE and the un-American and illegal actions of ICE, including unwarranted killing, tear-gassing, kidnapping, and arresting of innocent people.

Today at school dismissal, I followed a suspicious pickup around for a bit, keeping an eye on them, trying to figure out if they were ICE. Then I realized they were keeping an eye on me also. Then I realized they were, in fact, other parents. Life in Minnesota, January 2026.

If you are a Californian who doesn’t think throwing more money at OpenAI is a good use of state resources (or a useful intervention for learners in a teaching focused university system), add your voice.
The CSU/OpenAI contract is set to expire June 30, 2026.

Sign this petition: https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/cancel-chatgpt-edu-invest-in-humans/ for the CSU NOT to renew the contract and to use the savings to protect jobs at CSU campuses facing layoffs.

Reminded of the time that a BBC World Service presenter asked their guest how long there had been a Latino presence in Los Angeles and I yelled at my car stereo, “The name of the city is **LOS ANGELES**!”
I may have a stroke.

Someone said protests don’t belong in church and it took every ounce of self-censure within me not to say “Deborah you are literally a Protestant.”

A PROTESTant.

St. Peter Minnesota's police scorecard is better than most police departments in the US.

There is no racial disparities in killings by St. Peter police, because... St. Peter police haven't killed anyone in the last 13 years.🤷🏿‍♂️

And St. Peter has a higher percent of Black residents than California.

Of course, in this case, the husband of the victim knew the police chief personally. And called him. Most people don’t have that kind of connection to their local police.
