It really never stops being satisfying to learn that the person showing up in a screenshot being an absolute tool is someone you already blocked some time ago.

Also, and I feel like we need to keep harping on this: we did it with the support of his VP. Turns out this sort of thing is pretty damn easy when you've got that level of operational support.
the most braindead kind of take in these situations. we've had the unquestioned power to turn most countries into glass parking lots for most of our lifetimes. who on earth is still impressed by this?

This is what frustrates me more with every iteration of this damned cycle. Trump does something insane. Then he says something more insane about it. Then pretty much *everyone* acts as though his word is gospel and that that's what happened. Then a week later that he was full of shit.
We keep talking like Trump has taken over Venezuela, WHEN IT'S NOT CLEAR HE'S TAKEN OVER VENEZUELA.

Yes, he's fucked things up that much.

What I enjoy about this farce is how Trump is going out of his way to ensure that the person he wants to be his puppet literally cannot allow herself to be his puppet.

The darker aspect of all this, of course, is when he tries the same thing on her, the operation blows up, and we're in a hot war.
Trump simply does not plan or strategize. He's aggressive, he reacts, he threatens. He's impulsive. He always want to go from point A to B but never considers what point C is.
America is a rogue and malevolent state and global bad actor

The best part, out of all the best parts of this, is the folks whining that alt text policing from random assholes was used as the example of Bsky shittiness.
grim posthumous scenario i had not previously considered: you post a picture of the missile headed straight for you, and are memorialized by a bunch of random assholes complaining about alt text

Obviously the major point is that we invaded a sovereign nation, kidnapped their head of state and his wife, killed (more of) their civilians, and took a dump on our constitution while doing it but also... no meaningful benefits will come of the whole thing.

To continue to overlitigate the dumb analogy a guy made to feel good about lending support to Republicans: if you hire an exterminator to solve your problems but ignore their suggestions AND the fact that you live next to a landfill, you're gonna look ridiculous when you whine about the exterminator

Thing that's totally gonna tank Mamdani in this moment: telling Israel to piss off.
Mamdani rescinded every executive order issued by Eric Adams after Adams's indictment, but still the "New York Times" is focusing exclusively on two of those orders that had to do with Israel.

There is someone singling out Israel here. And it isn't Zohran Mamdani.

WELKER: Mr. Secretary, are you running Venezuela right now?

MARCO RUBIO: Yeah. People are fixating on that. Here's the bottom line -- we expect to see changes in Venezuela

Noting the egregious hypocrisy, not as a gotcha—you can't shame them by showing that they're acting against stated principles, because they don't have any principles—but as a reminder that this movement is post-truth, using words merely as tools to cheer their "team" or to get something they want.
What a difference a year makes.

The thing about any of these fantasies is that they require those other countries to exercise initiative and take serious risks and I hate to tell you this guys but there's a reason that the US got it's 'world police' position.
I’ve been saying for a year, the “good” future involves some sort of long-spanning democracy-supporting alliance of European, Canadian, Japan nations sponsoring a Resistance / Revolution to overthrow the Regime.
So when can you start

There are two exterminators in town, one is good and the other is notoriously shitty. Your landlord asks who he should hire for the roach problem. You say “I don’t care it’s all the same to me.” He hires the shitty one. You leave a one-star yelp review on the good exterminator.

There's significant evidence from state legislative term limits that they do, in fact, empower both lobbyists and state executive branches.

"Disagreeing" without offering any counter-evidence is just vibes.
I disagree with the suggestion that term limits would further empower lobbyists and therefore we shouldn't consider them as a viable path forward. The current system of federal elected officials who are financially incentivized to become insider traders until they choose to retire isn't working.

A former staffer said that U.S. officials would not be performing a formal occupation like in Iraq. “We’re going to tell them: ‘Hey, this is what you have to do in order for there not to be another strike. That’s what [Trump] sees as running the country.” www.washingtonpost.com/national-sec...

What 'conjunction' could this operation have been run with law enforcement?
Either it was a limited operation merely to arrest Maduro and move on, or, it is an ongoing major regime change committment that will open up a transition including international and private sector partners. It really can't be both

Giving 'Falling Skies' a shot after my mom's recommendation and my perpetual fondness of seeing Noah Wyle playing the role of Noah Wyle as he plays it in every show he's a part of. So far? Pretty okay with a number of "Oh hey, it's that guy" appearances already.
