This isn't mine, and I can't definitively find the original source. But I love this little bit of wisdom:

"If you're a fifteen-minute walk from a coffee shop, but the server there has to drive an hour to get to work, you don't live in a walkable city. You live in a theme park."
For all the fearmongering about capital flight from New York City, there’s an exodus few want to talk about: working people.

Sky-high rents and outrageous child care costs are already pushing families out of the city they keep running.

That’s what we have to change.

Fascinating interview in @thesicktimes.org with musician Dave Ruder on his “Long Covid album.” I love this notion of absurdity as a chronic illness modality: “Absurdity is a great tool in the face of diminished ability, diminished capacity, diminished horizons.” thesicktimes.org/2026/01/12/c...
Composing the “Long COVID album”: An interview with Dave Ruder - The Sick Times
Last fall, Brooklyn-based musician Dave Ruder coined a new format when he released a “Long COVID album,” shaped by his experience with the disease.

Three cheers for Philip Glass, whose Solo Piano record has been my boon companion for decades whenever I'm painting. (I notice that Glass didn't use the current administration's name for the center in his letter.)

everyone should indeed get basic income but a specific reason artists should get basic income instead of relying on grants is we get better art when people can pursue their specific things vs when they have to outline projects that will seduce grant committees

‘Bubble batteries’ move from prototype to global rollout. Italy-based Energy Dome has begun operating a 20MW CO₂ “battery” that stores surplus solar and wind power by compressing and expanding carbon dioxide inside a giant dome.

Since so many people are fangirling over Carney's supposed "historic" speech in Davos, I want to offer an alternative reading.

This is not left cynicism, but a sober reading of imperial positioning in this moment.

1) Carney squarely positioned Canada as a middle power.

“Nostalgia is not a strategy” is the line sticking with me today, feeling unexpectedly inspired by Carney.

Can we put that on Olympic jerseys? 🇨🇦

My local community centre is hosting a Wreslemania viewing party with beer and chips and there are things about Quebec that you just can't get anywhere else.

Mark Carney takes the sign out of the window. A brave and powerful speech, calling for middle powers to stop appeasing and pretending this is business as usual - and start building new alliances. I think this is the speech - and the PM - that a lot of Canadians have been waiting for. #cdnpoli #Davos
