Dusenbery highlights the astonishing underfunding of conditions that affect more women than men.
According to the Chronic Pain Research Alliance, vulvodynia, temporomandibular joint disorders, interstitial cystitis, fibro, endometriosis, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic tension-type headache, chronic migraine, chronic low back pain, and myalgic encephalomyelitis research received just $100M total from the NIH in 2014. They estimated that is an average investment of just $1.06 per affected patient. (By comparison, the NIH spends about $35 on each person with diabetes.)
