I left the intro out, didn’t I.

Well, here goes.

I’m a nearly 40 year old woman with #ADHD and #depression. I am probably best known for salty fandom commentary, running @geekcalligraphy.bsky.social with my best friend, knitting in public, and acerbic commentary on Jews and comics.
So apparently I’m in a starter pack? Neat!

So for the new folks who only found me here and for everyone who came from Ye Olde Birde Site, an intro and some ground rules.

Rule 1 - this is my living room. That means my word is law and I will brook no disrespect here.
End of year invoices have been sent out. There are no dirty dishes in the kitchen sink. I have selfish knitting, a soon to be assembled plate full of cured meats & accompaniments, and a choice of either wine or an edible.

Let’s send 2025 out on its ass.

Conventions, if you use AI do not be surprised if creators turn down your invitations to be guests or even to be on panels.

Do not use tools trained on stolen work from creators and then tell them you want to honor or uplift them - that’s not what you’re doing. You’re stealing and being lazy.

As we were walking to the beach at Charley Young Park, I heard someone speaking rapid Hebrew into their phone. I was deeply tempted to shout “יום נולד שמח!” to see his reaction.

This thread is super interesting as a fellow not Christian who is also saturated in its myths because America, but I wonder if the need to make all the innkeepers ‘bad’ is another way of saying “those stupid Jews who didn’t know who was being carried by this pregnant lady.”
If you are an innkeeper and all of the rooms in your inn are full and then a pregnant lady shows up and says "hey can I get a room?" What are you gonna say? You don't have any rooms left! You're gonna say, "sorry, I don't have any rooms left!" That's not *bad*, that's just *true*.

And to the trans community, know this:
You are created in the Divine image.
Our community is better with you in it.
Our community is beautiful because you are in it.
We will continue to be in solidarity with you.

Trans people's lives and futures are not up for debate. They are a beloved part of the Jewish community, and all communities. NCJW will always advocate for their ability to access the health care they need, when they need it.

Me: Mom, can I have the recipe for [one of my childhood safe foods]?
Mom, several texts later: When you were little, it was one of the things that you ate regularly you really liked it.
Me: That would be why I want the recipe.

Night 4.

Whoa, we’re halfway there. Whoa, candles near some chairs.

מאי חנוכה?

What is חנוכה? This is a question that begins the recorded debate of the schools of Hillel and Shammai that dictates how the candles that we mark this holiday with should be lit.
What is חנוכה? To me it is the holiday of And.
It is the story of the Hasmonean victory over the Selucids.

As a recovering WSFS business meeting attendee, I would like to note that if you run your organization using a parliamentary system with motions you should probably vote on those motions.

Question for my Aussie bakers:

I’m going to have to do several batches of ANZAC biscuits for the parties we’re throwing for the @brisbanein28.bsky.social bid. Does anyone know if I can make the dough and freeze it in wee balls and then bake the biscuits when I need them?

After speaking with whoever is dispatched to make the “are you bleeding to death” phone call, I am on normally warm soft foods (nothing scalding, but it doesn’t have to be lukewarm) and am hoping to have latkes at some point this holiday.
He says to keep to the regimen for a week. Thankfully my care doc says I only need to fully restrict 2-3 days & if the site is healing well I get to eat real food.

We are unlikely to be having the usual gamut of food that ranges from fried dumplings to falafel this year, but there will be latkes.

Due to Husband Shaped Creature’s company being acquired by Larger Company, our health insurance and FSA all changes January 1.

However, they fully funded the FSA when Previous Insurance Year turned over. This means we are in possession of a bunch of someone else’s money for healthcare.

This thread.
The problem is not that we do not teach people they should be good, the problem is that we teach people being good is thankless and ultimately the lot of a good person is to be taken advantage of by funnier, more colorful, sexier naughty people.

It is virtue as designated driver for society.

I promise if you’re not Jewish and don’t know any Jews quite well you really do not understand the level of justified paranoia baked into most public Jewish gatherings: Security at swimming lessons at the JCC, off duty police outside a bar mitzvah as a favour, etc. It shocked me.
Synagogues were safe until they weren’t. JCC were safe until they weren’t. Public beaches, public parks…risk is something I think about every single time I take my family to school, pray, exist as Jews
My kids woke up so excited this morning for the first night of Hannukah and now yet again we have a festival where I’m very conflicted about whether it’s safe to take them to synagogue to celebrate. Communities shouldn’t have to live like this.

No, Jews around the world don't suffer because of the actions of the government of Israel. Jews around the world suffer because antisemites use the actions of the government of Israel to justify attacks on Jews. And if you make the same association, you're also an antisemite.

It's been a very upsetting day to be Jewish & doesn't look to be improving, & violence doesn't solve anything but I do think if something humorously unpleasant happened to an antisemite it'd be a little comforting. Like I'm not saying trip Mel Gibson, but if he fell down a LITTLE I wouldn't be sad.
