I hope you’re all doing ok.
It is 1981 and you are 12 and have received a Sony Walkman for Christmas. It has orange earpads on the headphones. To your uneducated ears they sound miraculous. You put a cassette in – The Police's Ghost in the Machine – and hit play.

There's a person in this house who is a) sick, b) in the kitchen, and c) unmasked, and d) coughing up a storm.

In other unrel... er, related news, this got delivered (for me) today:

Lots of sirens, Boulder. Sounds like Friday evening commute has gotten off on the wrong foot.

After a week of sick I'm almsot feeling human. Lungs and sinus still a little cruddy. Really hoping this doesn't come back in a wave, I have a prodigious amount of work to do in the next few weeks. Simply cannot afford to be out of commission.

Six months with Linux (Fedora 42, then 43) as my primary desktop OS. No real complaints, and I've been able to find a tool to do everything I need to do.

Magic Johnson was the grand marshal of the Rose Parade today, and as someone who remembers his November 1991 HIV announcement: if you had told anybody that day that he would be alive and healthy 34+ years later, I don't think they would have believed you. Medicine and research—they work.

Speaking of moving to new apps: I’m pretty much using Skeets instead of the official Bsky client, on both phone and ipad. Lots of neat, if relatively small, improvements.

We have American problems which require American solutions. Some will be trivial, some will require us to remember the great undertakings of our past. We can, we have – we will – do great things. It takes but a leader to arouse the patriotic spirit.
It's striking that progressives like Tim Walz and Zohran Mamdani evoke the middle American attitude that, "Yes, we can fix these social problems because we're Americans and it's the right thing to do!" While the "America first" right only emulates failed and failing nation-states elsewhere.

AFL-CIO hq had this painting hanging around their main meeting hall. I have a copy in my office. It depicts the scale of the strike and the roles so many people played almost like a diorama.

It is about as deeply imperfect as a large human structure can be, but I remain a serious fan and proponent of the EU project. Cooperation and solidarity and strength together are a powerful set of tools for a united Europe, especially in a time of new Russian aggression. The EU is good, actually.

As interested as I am to see Mamdani's mayorship unfold, I am also interested - if a great deal less excited and eager - to see the old machine (NYPD, billionaires' club, etc) and its response to him. They won't go quietly.

For the many foreigners who seem interested in our new mayor, I’m reposting my favorite of his campaign videos, which I think illustrates why he won. It’s an expert video, he is appealing in it, and he radiates fondness for actual real New Yorkers, which is surprisingly rare in our city’s pols.
