Hello BlueSky! (And thank you for doing this!)

I'm a writer, photographer, and nerd, but not necessarily in that order. I have the best of my photos now up for sale via SmugMug, and I've even broken them out into categories, like Aviation, Nature, Beach and Ocean, and such.

I hope you enjoy :-)

Going to war against Iraq in 2003 was a clearly bad idea, but those in favor made the effort to justify it. With lies, yes, but they felt some obligation to the public.

Trump's desired war against Venezuela is purely his own, and he doesn't need to justify it beyond his feelings.

takes an unbelievable level of failed skill checks to be a loser if you're rich. you have unrestrained time and resources to hone any skill in the world and to verifiably support your local community but instead you're a selfish spineless blight on society. no excuse for it

Character isn't something you tell people about.

It's something you live.

One year I got a little tipsy and went to a writer’s website and sent a note to say she had written my favorite book of the year. And she wrote back to thank me! The whole thing was lovely and you should absolutely do it; your favorite writer is a human being who would love to hear it.
Holy crow, I got an actual card in the mail from someone thanking me for writing my poetry collection. Friend of a friend of a relative or something like that. Nobody can't tell me NOTHING for the rest of today. Amazing.

Tell writers when you like their stuff. Man, what a feeling.

You can disagree and argue as much as you like but the point of evaluating something scientifically is that not every statement should be given equal credence because evidence matters
JD Vance: "Science as practiced in its best form is that if you disagree with it, then you ought to criticize it and you ought to argue against it."

I see the “technically it’s ephebophelia” crowd is out today, so just a reminder that A) this is NOT a case where technically correct is the best kind of correct and B) the minute you say this, the gods dump you in the “irredeemable creeper” basket and wash their hands thoroughly after touching you.

I know everyone's experience will be different, but the best thing about Starbucks for me over the years has been their baristas.

Help them out, don't cross the line!
As of this morning, Starbucks workers across the country are officially ON STRIKE. And we're prepared for this to become the biggest and longest ULP strike in Starbucks history.

oh it's just another "he said she said"—yes, and we're learning that in the vast majority of cases "he" was lying, so isn't it so interesting that in such a culture a phrase was popularized for such situations to mean "no way of knowing the truth here, let's not investigate or change anything"

another manifestation of this is when you criticize the right and somebody tsk tsks "they say the same thing about the left," like, yeah, somebody is lying, are you interested in who? because the answer is easily discoverable
Perfect example of political media operating under the post-truth standard that (1) distorts the facts until the parties look approximately equal, and (2) holds “do MAGA voters care?” as a higher standard than “is it true?” or “is it important for the public to know about this?”
Wild to watch playbook run cover for this particular Trump scandal

the biggest lesson from the emails today is that powerful people are so unafraid of consequences for crimes as bad as “raping children” that they will just talk about it openly in emails

the only path to a better society is one where that is no longer true
