My beloved was horrified to discover, via tv advertizing on a basketball game, that "overnight oats" exist, and that people willingly eat them.

Belatedly watching Mamdani inauguration& Jumaane Williams speech: “That’s the thing about uncertainty- anything can happen. But also, anything *can* happen. We could make NY more affordable, more safe and more just. We could, we can, and we have to try.” That’s it, y’all. That’s radical pragmatism.

God recovery is boring. It's 10:30 and apparently I need a nap.

By separating beauty and life, the world objectifies & determines what is beautiful. We're thus content to live lives largely deprived of beauty, happy to occasionally glimpse it at museums & on screens. Grasping the beauty in/of life is nothing less than a refusal of this world.

I left New York in 1988, but a little splinter of New Yorker came with me, and I'm just more than thrilled to see Mamdami sworn in. Let's do this.

This is the hope we deserve.

This is the hope we must practice.

And it is with this hope we will win.

"Faith without works is dead," Jumaane Williams. Then weeping as he promises to build a better city for every kid like he was. "Just hold on. We're going to be all right ... "
Who me? Weeping as they all hold hands and pledge to hold on for the duration.

I have never been so impressed by a speech by a comptroller in my life. Hello Mark Levine.

The whole vibe of the Mamdani administration swearing-in is giving me hope. Cheerful. Let's-get-to-work. Loving. Joyful.

The sheer level of violence to women's bodies that modern medicine takes for normal is really stunning. I didn't have kids, so I'm coming to this late, and I'm outraged for all of us.

(I'm fine. Recovering as I should. But boy howdy.)

A joyful burst of a ballgown, ruched in rosy silk & the perfect party dress if New Year’s Eve is your thing. It isn’t mine, I am wrapped up in a cosy knit on the sofa but I would like to say a big thank you for your connections this year. Charles James dress, 1953 #museumatFIT #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

Hey it's a new year, here's some life advice from me:

- any time you think to yourself "I'd love to do [creative endeavor], but I could never" — just do it. Learn embroidery, write a novel, try doing synchronized swimming, take a ballet class. The worst that could happen is you suck at it.

Don't use their language, @newyorker.com that is not even a real word. What the hell is wrong with "flee" or like. "Flee this godforsaken country"

Chuck just found mountain lion tracks underneath our shed (I think I've seen them all week while dog walking). And now there's a pack of hound-sounding dogs out there, and we're hoping it's not "cat hunters" who go out with dogs this time of year.
Here kitty kitty! go back under the porch!

I would not have piggyback this 2nd surgery on top of the 1st one, but I needed to get it on this years deductible. Broken system at all levels (except for my surgeon who was great)
Healthcare premiums are set to soar in 2026 as key subsidies under the Affordable Care Act expire for millions of people. The United States "has essentially done nothing to control health care costs," says Elisabeth Benjamin of @cssnyorg.bsky.social.

Maybe, if you're not actually in university classrooms, teaching students in the age of gAI, perhaps you might want to stop and listen when people actually in those classrooms raise concerns about what they are seeing; and not just dismiss us as luddites, or boomers, or cruel profs playing cops

This is certainly making me feel better about skipping both a family wedding and Christmas so I don't get sick and blow this surgery apt. tomorrow (which would kick it into the new year and a whole new High Deductible).
