Happy Holidays,

I've heard it's "Giving Tuesday" so I thought I would make an appeal by sharing my latest video.

Honestly though, my next video is going to be awhile in the future as in a few minutes I have to catch the bus to have oral surgery! Yes, how festive.

Elon Musk appointed 19-year-old Edward “Big Balls” Coristine, the grandson of a KGB lieutenant colonel to DOGE. He was instrumental in cutting funding for the United States Agency for International Development, which directly resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of poor people overseas.

Unfortunate paywall here, but I read what I could and generally my own studies strongly support the thesis here. Yes, of course there are similarities, but in particular expressions of mental illness have changed a lot. When the ancients got angry, they felt it in their feet. We don't.
A common assumption is that throughout history, people have experienced the same basic range of emotions. A radical field of history now challenges this assumption, Gal Beckerman reports. theatln.tc/KD2QRX9Y

I just taught my lecture course on mid-20th c US history, which starts with Harding and concludes with Nixon.

For the first time, I had to pause and stress that those scandals were actually shocking at the time and, what’s more, that Americans actually demanded people be held accountable.
All of the money that changed hands in the Teapot Dome scandal totaled less than $10 million after adjusting for inflation, and it was considered so corrupt we still teach it in high school government classes a century later.
Corruption so pungent, it wafts right off the page:

Lobbyists who do pardon deals “say their going rate is $1 million. Pardon-seekers have offered some lobbyists close to the president success fees of as much as $6 million if they can close the deal.”

Apparently Trump hasn't seen any of the holiday specials where the bad guy who tries to destroy Christmas gets it in the end.
The President of the United States is very seriously mentally ill, and elected Republicans are so afraid of him that they won’t do or say anything about it.

President Trump’s spiteful defamation suit against the Pulitzer Prize Board may backfire, as the latter is now demanding Trump’s psychological records, prescription medication records, and tax returns in the discovery process. trib.al/LUCScTR

I heard 90% of what has been released has been redacted.

Yet this got through.

Imagine how prevalent this stuff must be. This is a losing battle for them. They must know that.
You would think they’d be better at this with the consequences being so high.

Here's why lying is a poor strategy, particularly long term.
HASSETT: If the Supreme Court doesn't find with us, refunds would go to whoever cut the check for the tariff

BRENNAN: Doesn't the administration claim it was the country that paid that?

We may get a vote after all, over Johnson's objections.

MAGA is cracking up.
FOUR REPUBLICANS just signed the House Democratic discharge petition to force a House vote on the Hakeem Jeffries bill to extend health care tax credits for 3 years: Brian Fitzpatrick (PA), Mike Lawler (NY), Rob Bresnahan (PA), and Ryan Mackenzie (PA). Gives it the required 218 signatures. Huge news

LEST WE FORGET

Dems ended the shutdown based on a promise that there would be a vote on the ACA subsidies.

Problem was it looked like it might actually pass. So Johnson decided not to allow a vote. It's funny no one seems to be talking about that.

Republicans are a problem. But Dems are too.
Despite the fact that a significant number of swing-district Republicans want to join Dems to vote for a clean bill to extend ACA subsidies which would easily pass the House, Mike Johnson refuses to bring it to the floor. NBC:

We have the worst public safety net of any peer country. Absolutely ZERO people come here for free government money which is very hard to get for citizens. Refugees get loans. Loans with terrible terms.

People come here because of opportunities & the rule of law. Both of which are vanishing.
