This whole thread. Fraud in welfare has always been exceedingly rare. Always. The safeguards designed to prevent more fraud typically cost more than the fraud. We waste money preventing fraud and people still believe there’s rampant fraud bc Republicans lie.
Let's review the facts at hand here: A Democratic administration discovered and prosecuted a case of welfare fraud. Republicans are now using this case to smear hundreds of thousands of immigrants and militarize an entire city.

And your conclusion is that Democrats need to do something different?

This isn’t about deporting “the worst of the worst.” It’s about deliberately sowing fear and chaos in cities that oppose the Trump regime

I would like to add that they were probably the same men who defended cops that kill black people.
Men who defend Jonathan Ross for murdering Renee Good are not safe to be around. End those relationships.

The reason the “paid protestor” accusation is so popular is that these are people who cannot imagine doing something because it’s right, to stand up for a principle, talking to other people like that.
Rep. Byron Donalds: "These agitators -- who by the way are paid, folks. America, they are paid to do this kind of mess."

I would like to underscore this part: "People are in the streets in greater numbers than the first Trump term." Elite pundits and opinion are extremely resistant to this fact and it has trickled down to regular people. But it is demonstrably TRUE. Ask why they are so resistant? Who does it serve?
People are in the streets in greater numbers than the first Trump term and party ID is shifting more significantly, and yet the Democratic Party has been considerably more accommodationist
New party identification polling from Gallup this week shows Americans are moving against Trump faster than they did in his first term. Adults were R+4 in 2024, now D+8. That 12-pt drop is 3x the change in the first year of his first term.

This is why it annoys me when people try to make it seem as if this is how things have always been. There was a time when greater literacy and reading as a part of everyday life for people of every class was a national mission. Then it changed drastically and now we’re here.
Last fall I ended up looking at a lot of Seventeen magazines for a project. Even in the late 90's, there was a section of book recs in every issue. One of them was historical fiction about the life of Van Gogh, doorstop-thick. It hit me then how much of a reading culture we've lost.
