Aurora color guide! What creates the different shades?

Different atoms getting "excited" at different altitudes

The bright reds are a sign of a particularly intense event

If you have a very low-latitude aurora observation from tonight, please record your exact time and rough location and DO NOT DELETE your photo. These observations will be important for scientific research of this event.

Comment below if you have a low-latitude aurora sighting.

Did you know that in Canada, if a budget doesn’t pass the government doesn’t shut down?

Federal workers aren’t furloughed.

Funding for social services doesn’t dry up.

Failure to pass a budget triggers an election.

It puts the politicians jobs on the line.

They get the budget passed.

If I lived in Virginia, the second that Spanberger is sworn in as governor, I'd be demanding @kaine.senate.gov's resignation so she could replace him with someone who's actually aware of what is going on.

Great news, everybody! The ACA is materially undermined, no concessions were secured on any other front, and Donald Trump will be able to declare this a personal win. But poor people did starve for about a week there, so there's that.
The Senate has decided the HSA idea from Trump is a win and they're going to do it.

Man, this timeline SUCKS.

Maybe important to note it was the disruption in air travel that Democrats couldn't stand and not, you know, 40+ million people not knowing where their next meal was coming from.

Immigration-related xenophobia has a much broader and more active constituency in America than transphobia does

The majority of US voters, so far as I can tell, flatly do not care about trans people one way or another. They aren't necessarily especially friendly to them, but they clearly find the notion that they're supposed to obsess over them distinctly offputting. (Despite major efforts by the right!)

I think a number of press outlets badly want there to be a groundswell of anti-trans feeling, because the ownership/senior editorial of those papers have absolutely cooked their own brains on transphobia. It seems to be largely an elite psychosis!
the harris campaign said the “they/them” ad didn’t sway the election.

one of the trump campaign’s top strategists this week said trans rights isn’t in the top five issues for swing voters.

when will the press stop talking about us like we’re a liability and start looking itself in the mirror

As someone who very much feels Israel has a right to exist, I absolutely cannot support this kind of terror.

People should not feel they must walk on eggshells in their own country because another country can reach out and attack specific individuals for exercising their God-given freedoms.

15 percent of American homes lacked indoor plumbing in 1960.

The idea that everyone in 1955 America lived in a split-level suburban home with two cars and three kids and one income is, quite simply, a fantasy borne of media consumption.

So now let’s fund Amtrak like we fund air travel!!
So it turns out... the US air travel system was incredibly, deeply dependent on federal funding to just run day-to-day all this time, to the benefit of private airline shareholders, when everyone thinks that state-run trains are leeching off the government. Weird!

That's another side-effect of this display. It keeps the focus on healthcare. And the Dems have been pretty successful at this throughout the shutdown. The GOP keeps trying and failing to change the narrative on this, and today is one more failure.
"Republicans are keeping the government closed, starving kids, and making you miss your Thanksgiving flights because they want your healthcare costs to go through the roof" is actually a pretty effective message for Democrats

I LEARNED THE ANSWER TO THIS

Chris's Steakhouse was a New Orleans landmark

Chris Matulich periodically got bored, sold it, waited for the new owner to fail, and bought it back cheap

The sale conditions: Can't move it, can't change the name

He did this six times

Then he sold it to Ruth Fertel
what did ruth mean when she said her steakhouse was "chris"

One last note about Watson, Crick, and Franklin: when Watson, Crick, and Wilkins stole her photographs, FRANKLIN was a PhD with a student of her own.

Crick was a grad student. Watson was a pretty newly minted PhD (1950).

Far too many people don’t know it was DOCTOR Franklin.
