It may be a bit of a spoiler, but Mateo eventually suffers from a constant fight to take in air after a stabbing injury in my series WIP. I won’t go into how or when that injury takes place, so maybe that makes it less of a spoiler.

“Why a cuckoo?” “I like the word. ‘Cuckoo, cuckoo’.” She grinned. “So funny. But, there. That’s what I’m doing. Why does it interest you?” “Oh, because I have to, currently, turn the chapel hourglass to tell the faithful when to do prayers. To be honest, I think I spend more time doing that than actual praying.” He didn’t laugh, because it wasn’t funny, but it did give him a sudden tightening of the chest as he remembered something extremely important. “Oh, Flog forgive me! I’ve forgotten to turn the hourglass. I’ve forgotten the chimes! How will they know they should be praying? Excuse me. Sorry. This was fascinating. Absolutely fascinating. Please keep me informed about your progress. Excuse me.” His sandals flapped against the cobbles as he burst out of the workshop, leaving Guniper shaking her head. They were a funny lot down at that monastery. Especially the yodelling woman.

“They’re here! It’s over. We’re on the list, Cisco! We either hang or risk dying trying to defect!” “What list? What are you talking about?” Rengel didn’t have time. He rapped his knuckles against Elvira’s door with a sudden desire for redemption from the terrible life choices he had made. When she opened up, Rengel offered her a key. Guerrero panicked. “What are you doing?” “What is this,” Elvira said as she took it. “A master key. Do you understand?” Rengel willed her to understand what that key could open. She studied his face, and she nodded. Guerrero reached for the key, still in a panic when Rengel pushed him aside and shoved him against the wall. “Juan,” Guerrero yelped. “This is treason—” “—We’re on the list! Next in line!” He mimed a noose being yanked tight around his own neck.

#PretendPanel, my current WIP centers around a small town mayoral election, so there’s no avoiding it there. What’s weird is that my mom wrote the thing some 30+ years ago, and while I’m giving it more substance, I feel like the political element hasn’t really changed. 1/2

#3 — "The Build-A-Monster Workshop" is a brilliant poetry collection that I got an early copy of. It explores monsters and monstrosity, ghouls, cryptids, hauntings, and how monsters (especially those out of folklore/myth) struggle to survive the modern world. 5 stars!

No "sixth" so instead, here's something about the six bombs.

This comes from the diary of one of the previous innkeepers, Yam/Yamma/Gramma Yamma. This foul-mouthed woman was Shallot's great-grandmother and this entry is from 50 years ago when Grilled is reading it.
We planted the six bombs around the inn, indicated on the map. For ease of discussing them, we planted five in a pentagon and one in the center and have taken to referring to them as the six planes of the dominion. The “Ophidia bomb” is underneath the oak tree near the front door. The “Aloutia bomb” is in Ygis’s root cellar. The “Cosmo bomb” is buried in the field where we grow feed for the animals. The “Quarantined bomb” is in that fucking tree line to the east that I fought Duvela about. Bitch wanted to cut them down. The “Makai bomb” is close to Muffin’s Bakery. She doesn’t know about it. The “Spiritua bomb” is under the southern silo near my old house. Next, we plan to hire a Domovoi to create a piping system so we can feed the ignition rope to all six bombs. Gotta find a Domovoi who won’t go squealing to Duvela about it. If ropes of the same length are connected to the bombs on one end and fed into the central ignition piece, a single flame will allow them to explode simultaneously. Once it’s ignited, you have about two minutes to get the fuck out, and you better be running, bitch. Or you could trap some motherfuckers in the inn first. Don’t expect to have an inn at the end, though. It’ll be nothing but wood splinters in a crater.

Sixth As was planned, Anne heads out of the house later after breakfast, with her notes and books weighing down a cloth carry bag. She dumps the bag in the back seat of the car, and I am beside myself over how to warn her that the vehicle has been tampered with. Anne! I shout into the void that is my spiritual realm, Anne, stop! Call your friend Tiny! Tell her to meet you here! Of course, she doesn’t hear me. Or listen. I’m reminded of the stubborn teenager she once was when I raised her. Her sixth sense has proven to be keen enough, so I’m compelled to believe she is dismissing me in order to prove herself right.

EXCEPT That last car, a newer model four door sedan, belongs to our mayor, and I can imagine the woman's face when she finds that invitation. No, she won’t be pleased. Nor will the rest of the residents parked along the street. Those kids are back, and they get to work on their original goal. Soap bars out, they make quick work of those windshields, scrubbing visibility into oblivion. All windshields except one. The Lincoln remains unscathed, the car that belongs to the witch.
