I don't want to get into that LGTVHD conversation, or whatever the fuck that twisted alphabet is. I’m not against it, not for it, not a member, not an anti-member. I don’t care. Period." "Damn. You’re being so defensive. Sus." "RYAN!" It wasn’t a warning, it was an order. "Sorry, sorry. Understood. It was just a question." I noticed my hands were sweating, but that didn't stop my mouth. "Have you ever thought about being a little less…" "Aggressive, unpleasant, hateful, harsh, cold, brute, dense, insensitive, the devil in human form?" He listed them off, embodying every single adjective. "No. You, being such a defender of taking pride in who you are, should understand why." "No, I don’t understand." I realized I was using the same raised tone of voice as him. "You like keeping everything bottled up inside, but you don't seem to mind letting out all that rage and its kin." I felt like I was in the middle of a sword fight. Our metallic strikes were blocking each other's attacks, though Dan's advantage was evident. Maybe I made a mistake challenging the master of defense and offense to a duel.

Back to the series for this #WIPSnips since many of its characters find themselves in defensive positions.
Then the cabin door pushed open and REDACTED stepped in. Mateo straightened up and cleared his throat as if he was caught passing secrets. And REDACTED said nothing, not at first. He emptied a pocket of miscellaneous belongings, then shed his coat like a snake shedding skin. He pulled a dagger from its sheath at his hip and set to the work of cleaning under his nails as he paced. “My daughter speaks fondly of you,” he said. “Are you fond of her?” His breath quickened. He wondered how REDACTED envisioned killing him; maybe first carving out his eyes for having looked at Elvira wrong, maybe removing a few fingers for having held her too close when shielding her from the outright butchery of Guevera. Maybe the man would take the simple path and just stab Mateo through the heart. That would be nice. Regardless, Mateo spoke in his own defense. “I have a daughter. I would never dishonor yours.”

My heart goes out to the families of the school shooting victims in BC yesterday. No parent should have to suffer losing their child in this manner. We here in the US experience that possibility more times than we should. To the Canadian families who are grieving today, I’m grieving with you.

Pennsylvania Back Roads —mid-October 1777 The horse collapsed. Not dramatically. Just folded. Jonas jumped down, swearing. "That's it. We're done for today." Kitchi already had the saddle off, hands moving fast. He pressed his palm to the horse's flank, then shook his head. Jonas sank onto a log. "We're chasing a ghost." Kitchi said nothing. Jonas's voice cracked. "Five weeks. No sign. No word. Nothing." Kitchi finally spoke. "He is alive." Jonas barked a laugh. "You don't know that." Kitchi turned on him. "You think I would still be standing here if he were not?" Jonas looked away. After a moment, quieter: "I don't know how you do this." Kitchi knelt beside the fallen horse, closing its eyes gently. "Neither did my brother." Jonas swallowed. They moved on foot.

Or maybe she was. Tomas watched Esme nod without lifting her eyes to Isaka. She brought Mateo’s pendant to her lips before she wrapped the chain tightly around the stick figure’s neck. She was choking it. Isaka handed her ingredients to perform some ritual, a bowl of sticky liquid that she used to drench the stick man, bowls of crushed powders and the bloody innards of some animal. It was probably from a chicken. Isaka made brief eye contact with Tomas at the door. He said nothing.

“Are you alright?” R’iegor turned, a look of concern on his face. Av’ry quickly shielded his mind and took a breath. “Fine. I’m fine. Just… tripped.” It was a laughable lie, but it was the best he could come up with on the spot. Fortunately, the events at the door were distracting enough that the priest didn’t even question it. Fox was still standing, hand on the door, but power was pouring from her, being pulled into the stone, spreading from her palm, gradually filling the engravings with liquid flames. As the fire spread, Fox slumped forward, the exertion apparently exhausting her. Worried that she was going to collapse, Av’ry moved closer. He was the only one, everyone else being either too startled or too afraid of what she might do next. Which was why, when the massive door suddenly swung open and Fox stumbled inside, he was the only one who reached her before it slammed shut again, sealing them both into darkness.

1. It wasn’t destiny. Nor was it Destiny, as he, along with all the other gods, was busy packing his bags and searching the universe for a compatible world that wasn’t about to undergo a tragic and catastrophic end. He’d set his sights on a roundworld somewhere billions of light years away that had an indigenous population that, through selective breeding, some fortunate and advantageous genetic mutations, and the results of wild magic, were quite conducive to the prospect of an ambivalent and capricious god turning up unannounced and declaring dominion over them. Godworld world was a little crowded with immortals anyway and he was tired of his pokey flat overlooking the more boring parts of the world.

She scoots closer to me, her face centimeters away now. "Romance is frowned upon. Parents of children are SELECTED for genetics. Teenagers can engage in experimental behaviors as long as their hormones are regulated to prevent unwanted births. Usually, that hormone regulation destroys most desire for those behaviors anyway." "Didn't seem to work for you." Her face comes closer, and I close my eyes before it fills my vision. The fine hairs on her cheek brush mine as she breathes in my ear, "I procured a different type of hormone." I let out a breath and open my eyes when she pulls back, but when I open my eyes, she hasn't returned to her comfortable half-meter distance. "You don't find me ugly, do you, Hale?"

Good morning #WIPSnips fam. I’m close to finishing this thing (I think), so my participation may (or may not) wane in the coming weeks as I focus on editing, readers and next steps. But here’s a selected snippet for select.
Tiny grabs the chart out of Anne's grip. "Ha," she cackles, slamming it to the table and pinning it there with one pointed finger. "You, my girl, have a gift." I determine that Tiny believes this because the chart that Anne so randomly selected is the chart Tiny was looking for. She shifts it under her finger, spins it like a makeshift carnival wheel of chance, then points out a quadrant. "This is the twelfth house of the castle."

Job-hunting is just so demoralizing. Anything I can find has at least two of three drawbacks:
- Pay sucks
- Either well below or too specialized for my education and experience
- The work would grind my soul into powder and I just left a job that did that

Llew placed a palm to a tree and stood a few moments in silence before moving to the next. Jonas accepted that the trees spoke to her, though he doubted he would ever fully comprehend it. They certainly didn’t talk to him, even the one planted over his children was silent to him. Something in the Aenuk-Ajnai bond. Something Quaver, under Aris’s urging, had tried to destroy. So many lives lost – Ajnai trees, Aenuks, and the countless people that could have been saved by such a pairing – all for Aris to preserve his own. And what had Aris done with that costly extended life? Retained control over a select few individuals with Syakaran power. To achieve what? To live and live and maybe one day regain his powers? And then what? Destroy all Aenuks and Ajnais simply so he could maintain his immortality? It seemed the old man had so feared his own death he’d rather have watched the rest of the world burn than face it.
