What are you implying?” asked Annika, “what about the war?” “Let’s just say,” the Midnighter’s smug attitude reasserted itself,” that things have progressed while you’ve been gone.” A musical tone sounded from Naldumiel’s pocket. He pulled out his phone, thumbed at it for a moment, and smiled. “Well,” he said as he slipped it back into his pocket, “this has been fascinating, but I have more pressing matters to attend to.” He turned to leave. “Where are you going, Naldumiel?” For the first time there was a hint of fear in Annika’s voice. “Oh, I think you know. Did you think I was hanging out on your porch for the scintillating conversation?” He turned his collar up against the tapering drizzle. “But I will leave some friends with you to keep you company. Wouldn’t want you to get lonely, would I?” He turned to one of the possessed jocks. “If they come out that door, kill them all,” he glanced back, “the little ones first. Annika?” He turned back and set the butt of his staff on the ground, “if I ever see you again, I will happily kill you. Tim,” he hesitated, and something like real regret crossed his face, “you’re a fool.” He turned, stepped into the shadows of the nearby trees, and disappeared.

i wrote two historical novels and both required a lot of research. I even studied french for one so that it would be as historically accurate as possible.

The call goes quiet from all ends as Cynthia’s gaze shifts back towards the hologram image. Twenty seconds pass, and just before I speak up to break the silence, she does it for me. “I’m going to need some time with these plans. Give me 12 hours and I can come back to you with a yes or no. Driona, did he say how long he’d wait for an answer?” “Until an hour before the meeting.” Cynthia nods in a business-like manner. “Then it’s good that this planet has a 27 hour day. Gives us plenty of time to do shit after I say yes or no. In the mean time I’ll get the balls rolling at least so we have a minimum amount of effort if I find something,” she says, keeping her eyes on the hologram. I let out a huge sigh of relief, but regret it almost instantly as Cynthia’s holographic gaze snaps back towards me. “Don’t be so sure that’s a yes, missy! We’ve made good progress in the last twelve months, but we’re really nowhere near being reliably operational still! This could be all sorts of risky for Terra Legionis Cohors!”

Nothing but silence on the radio. “Elara? Rec?” He was pacing. “Where’s this damned signal?” Kailil looked back at him, “How long should it take?” Throwing himself into the chair, he lasted a whole two seconds before he got up and joined the girl at the viewport. “Honestly kid, I don’t know. Rory liked to travel by foot across the various regions, well, by paw or hoof, depending on the species of mount he had, instead of using the fast travel points to #transport his character.

He liked the world, the scenery and the random encounters. there was a serene beauty to the place.

Oof! Looked all over my books and was uninspired by all my “progress”s that weren’t spoilers.

So here is chapter 2 where we meet the butler’s POV and encounter his first challenge on the page…
“I know. I’ll just have to let it stew for a bit longer. In the meantime, how is progress on the Orangerie?" Bayle mastered his expression to not give away his chagrin. "I haven't done much with it yet, Sir. I've been distracted by the issues with the plumbing." And the electrical issues, and cleaning out every nook and cranny, and making sure the updated life systems were properly functional so they didn't die in their sleep. He hadn't realized the greenhouse should be anywhere near the top of his list. "I was up there on my Sunday walk and it's still in a shocking state. It's a major highlight of the Hermitage. It needs to make a big impression on the summer session guests. Without the library and the Orangerie, we look like little more than an ornate hotel." Bayle wasn't sure he agreed with that. He'd never seen anything like the Hermitage, even when traveling with previous employers, but he nodded, agreeing by force of habit. "Of course, Sir."

There are 3 rivers cutting across the Fens that keep the area flooded and squishy most of the year, but the most important one is the Mountmouth River, with flows south of Fenholt. It is a highway for goods and people, as well as being a defensive feature. #Wrencer

Duels of Blood (and two exhausted menaces)
They knew they weren’t moving anytime soon; they’d been traveling constantly since midsummer, and with the new intelligence they’d gathered in Kinumura, Shinta had pushed hard to make the two-week trek from the Wen Valley to the Capital a few days shorter. The soothing coolness of Obito’s room, along with the contrast of being comfortably warm against one another, and the lulling, familiar noises of the onmitsu dormitories during a late morning, was plenty of encouragement to seek some much-needed rest. Daisuke didn’t know whether he or Obito fell asleep the fastest, but when his eyes opened, he was greeted by freshly-fallen snow as far as he could see and the scent of crisp mountain air. He sat on a veranda facing a seemingly endless field of thriving higanbana; their crimson red petals looked like ribbons of blood against the full moon’s light and sea of powder-white before him.

If the Faekyn were the oppressed ones to start with, then the Embassy was progress and maybe one day they’d even get a Regent of their own. If it was the other way around, though, it just felt like a circle we were caught in and that sooner or later the Faekyn would have a revolution of their own, and then it would be humans who had an Embassy. That, and the fact that if that were true, it meant the soldiers calling out their disgusting things were the ones most like me. The oppressed, the lesser party, lashing back out at their overlords. “Well, suppose I shall drink to their victory,” I muttered, “if they ever see fit to grant me a cup.”"

I've always been annoyed by the assumptions people made about the victims at Pompeii based on where they were found, their position or connection to others.
Making up relationships, assuming genders, etc.

With ‘The Big Feat’ very close to finishing, I’m running through ideas for the next one, ‘House Rules’, which is about a new school of magic being set up in my world.

It will be an inclusive story that is, in no way, an analogue of any other literary magic school.
