Today's 'Clearly I Don't Understand Time' fun fact:

'Kokomo' by the Beach Boys came out the same year as 'Smooth Criminal' by Michael Jackson, 'Pour Some Sugar on Me' by Def Leppard, and 'Fast Car' by Tracy Chapman.

Freaking 1988.

I would have put MONEY on it coming out late 1970s. What TF?

Hot take incoming before I get offline, take a nap, play some video games, and do some writing because social media has exhausted me:

It is patently unfair that the things that are good for you (eating healthy, not drinking much, working out) are diametrically opposed to the things that are fun.

Hmm.

I wonder if it's time to take another tour of the Zoo to see what new exhibits have been constructed since 2022.

I feel like other writers think about storycraft to a degree an order of magnitude more than I do. I see people talking about the themes and underlying character work in their books, about conflicts and motivations, about the deeper meaning in their books...and here I am just like 'hee hee, swears'.

Ross fil-forn (Maltese baked rice) for dinner. Ooh baby, that looks good. I did well this time.

Here we go, the moment you've all been waiting for. Promo me up.
Tell me what you're working on, what you've just released.
Repost others. Be generous with that button.
And if you've not yet done the chat, go back, answer the questions, then promo. It's the right thing to do.

Deep breath. Hold it. Let it out. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Don't open your eyes yet. No need to see her yet. This is all time only in your mind, all time just for you. Hold it. You can do this. Open your eyes and say it.

"Hi, I'm..."

Oh. She's gone.
Of course I'm going to do a writing prompt. Of course I am.
Go to.
I'm waiting.

For me, it's less about putting it off because it's uncomfortable, but about how does it fit within the confines of the story?

I actually put off the 'boring' middle stuff when it comes to writing because that's not the exciting part! That seems like a non-answer, though.
Q3:
Here at #HorrorWritersChat we really do like to peel back those insecurities and fears and expose them to the light. You can do this.
Which scene do you keep putting off? And why?

I am still figuring out what limits I have with intense body horror. My current WIP has some incredibly graphic stuff in it but, at the same time, it's fascinating. At what point does something being done turn from gross to cruel to creative? Is there a point?
Q2.
This question is not about the comfortable places that we go with horror. But the uncomfortable ones. The ones that turn us inside out even as we write them. The ones that make us wonder who we are, at the end. #HorrorWritersChat

I love the unknowable. I love the Lovecraftian/cosmic kind of horror that just tears at the understanding of characters' minds. I love how much freedom is available with it because there are no rules on what is unknown.
OK, so here we go, #HorrorWritersChat bods.

You know the drill. Four questions, repost as many as you like, no links: promo at the end.
First I want to know.
What makes you write the kind of horror that you write?

"Google, this is for research for a book. Okay? A BOOK. Anyway, how would bird-people kiss?"

I gambled and lost and I am terrified of what horrors may appear in my targeted content now.

In lieu of engaging with things/topics/people that are irritating me today, I'll instead opt for a question:

What is your favorite descriptor in books to show that something is gross?

For example, I apparently like using 'thick' as a descriptor for kinds of fluid (especially water).

Today's Did You Know:

Did you know that if your bathroom fan operates at a certain audio frequency and you are shaking your head back and forth after a shower and do so at a particular speed, you can hear the opening guitar riff of Detroit Rock City by KISS? It's true.

This is way too annoyingly accurate.

Job-hunting is just so demoralizing. Anything I can find has at least two of three drawbacks:
- Pay sucks
- Either well below or too specialized for my education and experience
- The work would grind my soul into powder and I just left a job that did that

So, you know, if you could buy my books?
