Funnily enough, this specific guy messed up the natural experiment in my undergrad thesis by being a gigantic partisan hack even before polarization swallowed everything.

There's a lesson to be learned here in that a lot of people looked at Mamdani and Platner and decided that the latter was a "young authentic candidate" and the former was not for reasons they insist are not racist

There are a lot of them, but this is one of the main reasons parliamentary democracies are usually more stable than presidential systems. There’s just too much political incentive for legislators to sit on the sidelines and cheer or jeer an independently elected executive without doing anything.
The incentives for a member of Congress are never going to point toward taking responsibility. Responsibility means risking you’ll screw up with everyone watching.
Much better from where they sit is to outsource all responsibility to the executive, who lately always gets a pass on everything.

Thinking about my 1L criminal procedure professor who said “it’s bad that SCOTUS hasn’t definitively stated that ‘identifying suspects by race is unconstitutional’ because once they do get around to addressing the issue they’re going to conclude that racial profiling in law enforcement is fine.”
