Basically the Torment Nexus meme

Anonymous Netizen: "I invented the term 9-9-6 as a warning about the danger of overwork and exploitation!"

(a few years years later)

Tech Billionaire: "Realizing the brilliant vision of an anonymous netizen, we are now instituting 9-9-6 as a company requirement."

Dongdaemun Design Plaza in Seoul, back in December. Absolutely amazing. Should be a location for a shoot for a Denis Villeneuve science fiction movie. Full gallery: camerondcampbell.smugmug.com/East-and-Sou...

He'll monetize this for years with gigs on right-wing media, merch, endorsements, maybe a meme coin. Wouldn't surprise me if that was his plan all the time.
BREAKING Greg Bovino has been removed as Border Patrol "commander at large" and will return to El Centro Calif, where he is expected to retire soon. A stunning turnaround after Pretti killing. Bovino's traveling blue city crackdown is over www.theatlantic.com/politics/202...
Gregory Bovino Gets Demoted
The Border Patrol chief was the public face of a traveling immigration crackdown on cities governed by Democrats.

Actually same with today's Wordle.

I felt like today's puzzle was designed specifically for me.

You've found the knock-off 山寨淡水 that was built as a tourist attraction in the boom years. Didn't get as much attention as the Venice and medieval English Village copies.

We've never eaten there either, because every time we walk by, they tell us it is a two hour wait. Not worth it. For Shanghai cuisine we actually like 方家小馆 in Tianmu.

Yeah. My impression was that the line at that one usually wasn't as long as at the one at Xinyi/Xinsheng. Might be wrong.

Not as long as the line at their flagship on Xinyi Road near Xinsheng, every time we walk past it and ask, the wait is like two hours. The wait in Breeze is a lot shorter.

The @economist.com is speaking a lot more clearly about this than almost any major media outlet in the US
Even before Saturday’s killing, Minnesotans were angry. The police chief called for protesters to stay peaceful. If they manage that, they will have demonstrated considerably more restraint than the armed officers of the federal administration econ.st/4rilp7L

Explanation for the (to me) baffling Trump-penguin image. Amazing that right-wing nuts are embracing memes based on Herzog films.
The origin is a Herzog documentary in which a solitary penguin abandons reason and the rest of the colony and heads for the mountains 70km away. It's certain death, but the researcher explains even if he fetches the penguin back, it'll still head for the mountains.

Really pleased to see my student Xue Qin publish a sole-authored article in 近代史研究 on educational officials in the central government in the late Qing, using the CGED-Q JSL!

We have a new working paper introducing the Tongguanlu 同官禄 as a source for studying positions, qualifications and kin of local officials in the late Qing. This is one of the few sources that provide information on the kin of holders of less prestigious degrees like 监生,生员,异途贡生。 osf.io/preprints/so...

Like how is it that someone like David Brooks, who hasn't had anything useful to say for decades, still has a column? Thomas Friedman? I could go on. I genuinely don't understand.

I have always wondered how it is that pundits seem to have some kind of equivalent of tenure, without anything like a formal review. It seems like once you are anointed as a Serious Person, you can have a column, lectures, appearances, etc. forever, even if you have nothing new to say.

Bluesky needs more discussion of paving tiles and I'm doing my best to fill the gap.

Yeah. Fortunately, Wuhan Station fortunately has a pretty complete canopy so never had an issue there. My uni (HKUST) did have some places outdoors where there were tiles with smooth finish and they were dangerous to walk on when wet. A few years ago they were replaced with textured tiles.

New photos from Wuhan High-speed Rail Station. The tiling on the platforms has a reflective finish which makes for interestng light. Every time I depart from Wuhan I take photos at the station and over the years I have built up a collection: camerondcampbell.smugmug.com/China/Mainla...
