But Stede just nudges him and wiggles his eyebrows excitedly, as if he feels Ed needs the extra hint. And it’s not like he does, really. Izzy is on the other side of the deck, and he’s all in his black leathers, talking to Fang over the sound of Frenchie’s singing. But as they talk, moving gently, there’s the glint of something at his lapel. Colour. Ed’s too far away to tell exactly what it is, but whatever it is, it matches the shade that decorates over his eyes. And Izzy doesn’t look self-conscious about it. He looks as comfortable in his own skin as Ed has ever seen him. He laughs, when Fang talks to him. He can wear the colour and the dark together, and seem at ease with it. It stabs Ed through the guts, on the right side. Hitting everything vital. They’d never laughed. They'd only ever been intense, and dark. He’d assumed that was Izzy’s fault — too stick in the mud, too serious. That Ed had needed to escape and find someone like Stede. He’d known, eventually, afterwards, that Izzy had needed to escape for his own reasons. He hadn’t known that laughter was one of them. It makes everything in him waver, but then Stede nudges him again, encouragingly. And Ed knows, instinctively, that if he doesn’t make the move on Izzy, at least in some form, Stede will feel obligated to refrain as well.

Serious answer: all three of the things that he lives for are the bare bones scraps of physical manifestations of intimacy and love. But he can't name intimacy and love because he doesn't deserve those things, offered those things and had them rejected.

the juice of GB to me is definitely that ed is just fucking around w a guy that he finds fascinating until they hang out enough that ed realizes he likes /himself/ more around stede and that’s what makes him realize he loves stede/wants to be w him
