But Stede just nudges him and wiggles his eyebrows excitedly, as if he feels Ed needs the extra hint. And it’s not like he does, really. Izzy is on the other side of the deck, and he’s all in his black leathers, talking to Fang over the sound of Frenchie’s singing. But as they talk, moving gently, there’s the glint of something at his lapel. Colour. Ed’s too far away to tell exactly what it is, but whatever it is, it matches the shade that decorates over his eyes. And Izzy doesn’t look self-conscious about it. He looks as comfortable in his own skin as Ed has ever seen him. He laughs, when Fang talks to him. He can wear the colour and the dark together, and seem at ease with it. It stabs Ed through the guts, on the right side. Hitting everything vital. They’d never laughed. They'd only ever been intense, and dark. He’d assumed that was Izzy’s fault — too stick in the mud, too serious. That Ed had needed to escape and find someone like Stede. He’d known, eventually, afterwards, that Izzy had needed to escape for his own reasons. He hadn’t known that laughter was one of them. It makes everything in him waver, but then Stede nudges him again, encouragingly. And Ed knows, instinctively, that if he doesn’t make the move on Izzy, at least in some form, Stede will feel obligated to refrain as well.

In the sticky cooldown, Ed says, hesitantly, “Do we want to talk about the Izzy thing?” “What?” Stede says, because his brain is thrumming pleasantly and it takes him a second to process Ed’s words. Then, “No.” A quick denial, heart thudding. “What thi—“ Then stops. “No.” “Stede.” “I’ll get the washcloth,” Stede says, hastily, to cut him off. “We ought to clean up.” Ed doesn’t say anything again, but he’s there, the next day. He often is in the cabin while Stede and Izzy pore over maps, but he’s normally happy doing his own thing. Today he’s watching everything. Stede finds he doesn’t know where to put his eyes. If he looks at Izzy, Ed gets a knowing glint to his eye. As if he’s privy to information that Stede isn’t. If Stede looks away, Ed smirks. He can’t win.

Stede hesitates, just for a moment. It wasn’t the done thing, to admit a fascination with the skies. Not these days. It had fallen out of fashion. And to speak now would not be an anonymous slip up with a lamplighter that would never come back to haunt him. Ed is his neighbour. And Stede knows nothing about him. Nothing except that he’s showing an enthusiasm for what Stede says that seems more than just polite. And that he clearly has an interest in inventions, and in science. Stede can’t always tell the difference between someone feigning polite interest and genuine curiosity. Doesn’t always notice when he’s being tolerated instead of welcomed. Has never managed to distinguish those two. But he’s never been able to extinguish hope, either. “A telescope,” he says. “I want to build a telescope.” “Don’t you need a glassworker for that?” Stede shakes his head. “I’ve tried that. It doesn’t work. The Dome, you see. I want to collect light through mirrors.” Ed looks at him. “You have a telescope?” Stede should hesitate. Stede should interrogate the giddiness in his mind, but instead he says, “Can you keep a secret?”
