We've had a year of ICE raids, rampant awful xenophobia, and racism, Pantone chooses "white" for 2026 color of the year. Wow. REALLY?

The U.K. will ban the sale of plastic-based wet wipes from 2026, targeting a major source of sewer blockages and riverine microplastics. The ban forces a full market shift toward biodegradable alternatives that the treatment plants can actually handle. tinyurl.com/2b3srnmh

Plastic wet wipes to be banned from spring 2027 in England
England is bringing in a ban on plastic wet wipes from 2027. This will mean they then have the same rules as the rest of the UK.

cool that the official position of the administration appears to be that black people don’t really count as americans
"The Donald Trump administration has changed which holidays qualify for free entrance to national parks, removing two holidays celebrating Black people and adding the president’s birthday."
National parks change prioritizes Trump birthday over days honoring Black people
Free entrance days at national parks no longer include MLK Day and Juneteenth.

Hi again! It's me with an another installment of the last book I ever thought would get banned--my picture book about a unicorn and kitty who are pals. A quick look at what this school district bizarrely found objectionable. 1/
You'll never guess what book got the Carroll ISD school library advisory committee to say "genitals" a dozen times in 20 minutes. @txfreedomread.bsky.social will have more on this story soon, but for now, you have to hear this audio. open.substack.com/pub/franklin...
Please don’t say “genitals” one more time, Carroll ISD SLAC.
Listen to the audio of the committee that decided to ban Pretty Perfect Kitty Corn from Carroll ISD. If you dare.

I've been teaching on the college level for almost 26 years now, and I have never had a student confront me after a class like one of my students did today. It was as if she wanted to start a fight--like, an actual fight. It was absolutely bizarre, and really disturbing.

If you don't want to be viewed as a supporter of fascism, you need to find an alternative music streaming service.
Spotify has laid off thousands in recent years, while reportedly paying artists $0.003 per stream.

Spotify profits rose 28% in Q3. Its CEO is worth $9.8 billion. It's making money off ICE recruitment ads.

Don't you think it's time put a wrap on corporate greed and exploitation?

You can’t tell if someone is disabled just by looking at them.

There’s no such thing as the “genuinely disabled”.

You are not entitled to a person’s entire medical history just so you can decide whether to believe them or not.

People are not faking disability, most are trying to fake being well.

PLAYING CARDS!

For day two of our Advent fun, here's one of the Newberry's many sets of playing cards. It's incomplete, but I love it anyway! (Wing ZX 547 .B4) It's by 16th c. German artist Sebald Beham and the acorns, pomegranates, and flowers suit me just fine!

December 8th and February 8th in west Japan are known as 'Koto-osame' (御事納め), a good day to finish something, and 'Koto-hajime' (御事始め), a good day for beginning something.
Rather confusingly (but unsurprisingly), this is the opposite in east Japan.

Jeffries has got to go. We need a new leader of House Democrats if we want to survive as a Party
Corporate Dem Rep Henry Cuellar & his wife were indicted in March 2024 for accepting hundreds of thousands in foreign bribes.

Trump just pardoned them.

Hakeem Jeffries is praising Trump’s decision as “exactly the right outcome” & praising Cuellar as “a beloved member of the House.”

Ridiculous.😐

It’s time for folks at DoD and in the IC to start lawyering up.

If you’re an officer or official who was forced into pushing through potentially illegal orders, get a lawyer.

If you’re a soldier, seaman or airman who was forced to execute them, get a lawyer.
